How to Match Flowers to Containers

Achieving captivating floral displays often hinges on selecting the appropriate vessels. This guide, featuring insights from floral designer Sara Grimshaw of SYG Designs, provides practical advice for pairing flowers with various container shapes. The emphasis is on understanding how the vase's form influences the arrangement's structure and overall aesthetic. The first pairing explores the use of ginger jars, characterized by their narrow opening and depth. Grimshaw recommends this traditional shape for its ease in creating interesting designs without requiring additional support like chicken wire or tape. An example composition includes foraged hosta leaves, wild honeysuckle vine, mock orange, 'Bowl of Cream' peonies, and white coneflower. The hosta leaves and honeysuckle establish a base, followed by the luxurious peonies and coneflowers for texture and color. The ginger jar's design naturally supports the arrangement, making it suitable for kitchen counters or entry tables. Next, footed bowls are highlighted as a versatile container shape for creating abundant, overflowing arrangements. A suggested composition for a footed bowl incorporates local foraged Southern hydrangeas, sweet pea, clematis, viburnum, blueberry branches, lavender phlomis, passion flower vine, and wild honeysuckle. The process begins with hydrangeas to form a substantial base, followed by trailing elements like clematis, passion flower vine, and honeysuckle to convey a sense of profusion. Sweet peas, blueberry branches, and lavender phlomis are then added to introduce height and scale. This type of arrangement is ideal as a focal point for a dining table or a bar area. Finally, cocktail glasses are presented as an option for crafting petite floral displays. Grimshaw suggests filling them with local Southern flora, such as marigolds, zinnias, begonias, blueberries, and David Austen 'Juliet' garden roses. The approach for these smaller arrangements focuses on maintaining similar color tones to create a cohesive yet organized look, allowing the individual blooms' petal patterns, textures, and shapes to be appreciated more clearly. This monochromatic or tonal strategy is described as calmer on the eye compared to highly colorful designs. Cocktail glass arrangements are well-suited for bedside tables in guest rooms or as an element of a thoughtful hostess gift, where one glass is filled with flowers while others remain empty. The article underscores the importance of considering the vessel's shape and dimensions when selecting flowers, providing specific examples and practical tips to create visually appealing and balanced floral arrangements for various settings. #FloralArrangement #VasePairing #HomeDecor #FlowerDesign #SouthernFlora #InteriorStyling #GingerJars #FootedBowls #CocktailGlasses #FloralArrangement #VasePairing #HomeDecor #FlowerDesign #SouthernFlora #InteriorStyling #GingerJars #FootedBowls #CocktailGlasses
