Pumpkin painting: Yes, try this at home!

Artist Susan Dupont Baptista provides a comprehensive guide to pumpkin painting, treating pumpkins as canvases for creative expression during the Halloween season. She emphasizes that this activity is suitable for home participation and offers practical advice for achieving successful and long-lasting painted pumpkins. The process begins with selecting an appropriate pumpkin or a previously dried gourd, ensuring it is free of holes that could lead to premature rotting and fruit flies. The choice of pumpkin should also consider its natural characteristics, such as its ability to stand upright, the presence of a "good side" for display, and whether its stem could be incorporated into the design, perhaps as a nose. Once the pumpkin is selected, it must be thoroughly cleaned using soap and water, then allowed to dry completely. A crucial step before painting is to apply a layer of acrylic spray sealer or water-based varnish, preferably in a matte or satin finish. This step is essential because it allows the paint to adhere properly to the pumpkin's surface. Dupont Baptista advises against priming or sanding the pumpkin, as these methods do not provide the necessary adhesion and can degrade the surface faster, leading to paint peeling off. The sealing or varnishing process should be carried out in a well-ventilated area, such as outdoors or in a garage with open doors, with a drop sheet or paper laid down to protect surrounding surfaces. After applying the sealer, it must be given adequate time to dry. With the pumpkin prepared, the creative painting process can begin. Dupont Baptista suggests applying a base coat of paint before adding details, as this helps to improve the overall appearance of the finished design. When initially applying paint, she recommends avoiding excessive water, as thicker paint adheres better to the varnished surface. If the paint appears watery and repels, the excess can be gently wiped off with a paper towel. The artist encourages participants to have fun with their chosen scene or face design. After the painting is complete, the pumpkin should be finished with one or two additional coats of acrylic sealer or water-based varnish. This final sealing step, also performed in a well-ventilated area, protects the artwork and further enhances its durability. Allowing it to dry completely before handling is important. Following these steps, painted pumpkins generally last much longer than carved pumpkins, providing several weeks of enjoyment as a festive decoration. #PumpkinPainting #DIYDecorations #HalloweenCrafts #SeasonalDecor #ArtisticExpression #HomeDecor #AcrylicPainting #CraftingTips #HolidayPreparation #PumpkinPainting #DIYDecorations #HalloweenCrafts #SeasonalDecor #ArtisticExpression #HomeDecor #AcrylicPainting #CraftingTips #HolidayPreparation
