Here’s how to up your storage game—literally
In recent years, the need for efficient home organization has significantly increased due to more individuals working and learning from home. This shift has highlighted the importance of furniture that is not only functional but also maximizes space. The focus is on versatile shelving and drawer systems that help maintain an organized, tidy, and accessible living environment across various rooms, including kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms, and closets.
A key trend in home organization is the adoption of skinny and tall furniture designs. Product designers are prioritizing items that can fit into constrained spaces while offering substantial storage capacity. Examples include narrow storage cabinets, floating-shelf bookcases, wardrobe racks with shelves, and coat trees with integrated shelving. Etageres are particularly noted for their ability to fit into tight areas while providing considerable storage. Furniture manufacturers like Coast to Coast Accents offer a range of etageres, from rustic to modern asymmetrical designs. Other companies, such as Universal Furniture, are reintroducing classic pieces like the Justeene corner cabinet, which makes use of otherwise empty vertical corner spaces, extending over seven feet high to meet modern storage demands. The Asher utility cabinet is another example, offering extensive behind-closed-doors organization with a Shaker design.
Optimizing organization involves creating storage solutions in every available space within furniture pieces. This includes dedicated compartments for books, office supplies, recipes, photographs, papers, craft items, and various household accessories like napkin rings, spices, pet toys, and candles. The slender nature of these furnishings allows them to be placed along walls, in corners, beside sofas or wood stoves, in hallways, and in larger bathrooms, kitchens, dining areas, dens, and great rooms, making them suitable for nearly any room in a home. Joe Ruedinger, principal design director at Sauder Woodworking Company, emphasizes that functionality and organizational capabilities are central to their designs, often incorporating double-deep storage for increased capacity. Consumers are seeking both open storage to display items and closed storage to conceal clutter, and Sauder integrates both into their products, sometimes even adding storage within doors.
Beyond practicality, the aesthetic appeal of storage solutions is crucial. While concealed storage can be fitted with attractive baskets, boxes, and vases, open shelving requires careful styling. Interior decorators advise against over-cluttering and suggest strategic arrangements for open shelves. For instance, books can be leaned rather than stacked, and small, thin accessories can be placed alongside framed prints. Larger accessories, such as sculptures, can complement horizontal stacks of books or decorative boxes, which can also discreetly store small items like paper clips, thumb drives, or remote controls. Everyday objects like unique seashells, favorite bowls, or planters can serve as stylish bookends. When organizing vertical storage, it is recommended to place less frequently used items on higher shelves and commonly used items at mid to low levels to ensure easy access. The goal is to balance essential storage with meaningful and decorative elements, making vertical spaces both functional and visually appealing.
