Eclectic Rug-Designer Aelfie Oudghiri Knows That Any Good Business Needs To Start With Intuition

Aelfie Oudghiri, the founder of the design company Aelfie, discusses her journey from being a dealer in carpets to establishing a brand known for its colorful, hand-knotted rugs and textiles. The article highlights her entrepreneurial spirit, which she traces back to her childhood, where she enjoyed creating and selling things. Oudghiri's upbringing, with parents who were builders and developers, fostered an early interest in decorating and art, influencing her decision-making process in personalizing her space from a young age. Her company, Aelfie, was born out of a perceived gap in the market for contemporary, fun, hand-constructed carpets, contrasting with the predominantly traditional or high-end options available at the time. Drawing inspiration from vintage and antique textiles, Oudghiri aimed to infuse traditional motifs, colors, and scales with a modern twist into her designs. Over the eight years since its inception, Aelfie's ambitions have evolved. Initially, Oudghiri considered expanding into a broader range of home goods, including furniture, pillows, bedding, blankets, and towels, to compete with larger companies. However, she ultimately decided to refocus on carpets, emphasizing the company's commitment to ethical manufacturing and the preservation of traditional crafts. Oudghiri shares a key lesson learned from running her business: the importance of following intuition over solely being guided by financial metrics like sales performance or profit margins. She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to trust their inner guidance, acknowledging that while external advice is abundant, personal intuition is paramount for success. She defines a good entrepreneur as someone who questions authority, is driven to be their own boss, yet also possesses collaborative spirit, strong morals, and respect for others. She views the current digital age as an opportune time for entrepreneurship, noting the shift in work culture away from lifelong employment in a single company. Looking ahead, Oudghiri is excited about increasing collaborations with other artists, a shift from her earlier practice of solely designing everything herself. This move allows her to explore diverse creative expressions without directly imitating others' work. Furthermore, she expresses enthusiasm for the company's new, eco-conscious production lines. Aelfie is partnering with Work+Shelter, an NGO focused on researching biodegradable materials and sustainable supply chains in India. This collaboration aims to ensure that Aelfie's products are manufactured using environmentally friendly materials and inks, with a transparent and ethical labor practice that supports a cooperative of women. #AelfieOudghiri #HomeDecor #RugDesign #Entrepreneurship #EthicalManufacturing #TextileDesign #ArtistCollaboration #SustainableDesign #InteriorDesign #AelfieOudghiri #HomeDecor #RugDesign #Entrepreneurship #EthicalManufacturing #TextileDesign #ArtistCollaboration #SustainableDesign #InteriorDesign
