7 Easy Home Projects You Should Do With Thrift Store Finds, Designers Say

Thrift stores offer a wealth of potential for unique home decor and furniture, requiring only creativity and some DIY effort to transform items into personalized pieces. This approach allows individuals to achieve high-end looks on a budget, distinguishing their living spaces with one-of-a-kind items. Interior designers Evelina Juzėnaitė of Planner 5D and Magda Callery of Style by Magda provide insights into selecting and transforming thrift store finds. One common and impactful DIY project involves updating vintage mirrors. Ornate mirrors, often found at thrift stores, can be reimagined to fit contemporary aesthetics. The key is to look for mirrors of various sizes, from small accent pieces to floor-length options, focusing on those with interesting or intricate frames. Minor imperfections like chips or blemishes can be embraced as part of the item's character. The transformation process typically involves repainting the frame with a chosen color or applying chalk-style paint for a distressed look. These refreshed mirrors can then serve as statement pieces in entryways or bedrooms, offering a custom touch. Another simple yet effective DIY idea is creating unique glassware planters. While assembling a matching set of glassware, plates, or vases from a thrift store can be challenging, this project leverages individual pieces regardless of their original color or pattern. Callery suggests using matte spray paint to unify mismatched items, giving them a cohesive and sophisticated appearance that mimics expensive decor. Suitable items include various types of glassware, plates, teacups, mugs, tealight candle holders, and vases. Elevating table decor is also achievable through thrifting and DIY. If commercially available table decorations do not align with personal taste, creating custom pieces is a viable alternative. Juzėnaitė recommends acquiring antique candle holders and vases, then repainting them or simply cleaning and buffing them to restore their original charm. This process allows for control over the final finish and color palette, resulting in personalized decor that feels special. For lighting, thrift stores can be a source of affordable lamps. Given the high cost of new lighting fixtures, finding table, floor, or pendant lamps with appealing shapes is a strategic starting point. The color or texture of the lamp base and shade can be entirely changed. The primary consideration is the condition of the wiring, ensuring it is safe and functional. DIY involves painting the lamp base in a desired color, such as matte black or brass, and then either sourcing or crafting a new lampshade to complement the updated base and personal style. Picture frames are another excellent thrift store find for DIY projects. Juzėnaitė highlights their durability and decorative potential. Even if the existing style doesn't fit, frames can be easily updated. The project involves selecting various sizes of frames and using paint or spray paint to create a matching set or a coordinated collection in different colors. These frames can then be used to display art, photographs, or as standalone wall art. Thrift stores are also a source for high-quality, solid wood furniture like dressers, tables, chairs, and shelves. Callery notes that solid wood pieces are durable and can be transformed to look high-end with minimal effort. The process involves sanding down the wooden item and then repainting it in a chosen color. Adding modern hardware, such as new pulls, can further enhance the furniture's appearance, making it look custom-made. Finally, antique books offer versatile decorative opportunities. This project can range from simply arranging cleaned books on shelves or coffee tables to more intricate crafts. Juzėnaitė suggests selecting books with unique illustrations or passages that can be carefully removed, framed, and integrated into gallery walls or displayed on shelves, adding a layer of historical charm and personal interest to a space. When undertaking thrift store DIYs, certain items should be avoided to prevent complications. Chipped or cracked glass and ceramic items pose safety risks due to potential breakage. Upholstered furniture can be expensive and time-consuming to reupholster, making it unsuitable for quick projects. Electrical appliances like chandeliers should be avoided unless one has expertise in electrical work due to potential wiring issues. Carpets and old textiles often require expensive and thorough cleaning, and items with strong, persistent odors indicate deep-seated issues that are difficult to remedy and can affect indoor air quality. #ThriftStoreDIY #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #Upcycling #BudgetDecor #CreativeProjects #FurnitureRefurbishing #VintageFinds #DIYHomeImprovement #ThriftStoreDIY #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #Upcycling #BudgetDecor #CreativeProjects #FurnitureRefurbishing #VintageFinds #DIYHomeImprovement
