Inside Brynn Olson Design Group's Luxe Gold Coast Transformation
Brynn Olson Design Group undertook a comprehensive renovation of a three-bedroom Gold Coast condo for empty nesters who frequently travel between Southern California and Chicago. The clients, having followed Olson's work, initially sought a furniture refresh but expanded the project to a complete gut renovation to update the 13-year-old space and enhance its livability and resale value. The primary goal was to create a fresh, inviting retreat suitable for their visits and for entertaining their grown children, while carefully balancing luxury with practicality to avoid over-improving the unit.
The renovation focused on several key areas, including a full kitchen overhaul, the integration of a fireplace in the living room, the addition of a chic wet/dry bar, and a complete transformation of the bathrooms, with particular emphasis on the primary bath. The design team aimed to infuse the space with a luxurious sensibility, reflecting the clients' desire for a sophisticated home where they could unwind and host gatherings, especially during the holidays.
A significant challenge involved making the compact Gold Coast condo feel spacious, functional, and luxurious. Olson's team maximized every square inch of the property. A small side room was ingeniously converted into an elegant entertaining area, complete with a bar and custom bookcases. This transformation required the installation of new plumbing to support a fully functional wet bar. The design included an antique mirror positioned opposite a large window, strategically reflecting light to visually expand the space. Rich colors, unique metal accents, and a bespoke polished brass etagere were incorporated to display barware, adding to the luxurious aesthetic. Instead of a traditional formal dining room, a versatile dining area adjacent to the kitchen was designed, featuring a custom banquette that comfortably seats eight to ten people around an oval table.
Considerable attention was given to the interior architecture, with the installation of custom baseboards, crown molding, and door surrounds. The original doors were updated with a fresh coat of black paint and new hardware, designed to resemble jewelry. Archways were introduced, and a new fireplace with a custom surround was added to the living space. Lighting played a crucial role in the design, with the inclusion of sconces and ceiling fixtures to create both beauty and ambiance. Additionally, gallery-like lighting was integrated throughout the condo to highlight and enhance the display of the clients' original artwork, contributing to the sophisticated atmosphere. Upon the project's completion, the clients' delighted reaction underscored the success of the transformation, validating the meticulous planning and execution by Brynn Olson Design Group.
