Joseph Altuzarra’s Collection for West Elm Kids Is a ‘Love Letter’ to His Daughters
Fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra has launched a new 42-piece collection for West Elm Kids, which he describes as a “love letter” to his two daughters, Emma and Charlotte. The collection aims to bridge the gap between overly childish and excessively grown-up furniture options for children's spaces, an issue Altuzarra encountered while decorating his own daughters' rooms. His goal was to create pieces that children could grow into, combining whimsical elements with stylish and timeless forms.
The inspiration for the designs stems directly from his daughters' personalities and interests. For instance, the cloud and balloon patterns featured on items such as mobiles, shelves, and sheet sets are a nod to Charlotte's “very sunny” and “super smiley” disposition. Similarly, star patterns found on pajamas and bedding reflect a sense of wonder and curiosity, echoing themes that resonate with children's imaginations.
The collection is comprehensive, offering a wide range of items suitable for nurseries and playrooms. It includes essential furniture pieces like gliders, rugs, tables, and cribs, enabling parents to furnish an entire children's space with cohesive and thoughtfully designed items. Altuzarra personally hand-drew all the illustrations and designs for the collection, emphasizing the deeply personal nature of this collaboration. He also appears alongside his daughters in the campaign photography, further highlighting the familial connection to the project.
Key items in the collection include an upholstered crib, a swivel glider, a seven-drawer changing table, a hot-air balloon mobile, a woven nightstand, toddlers’ and kids’ pajamas, a hot-air balloon rug, a ribbon pendant, and an oval mirror. These pieces showcase a balance between playful motifs and elegant design, ensuring they are aesthetically pleasing for adults while captivating for children. The collection is designed to offer sophisticated yet functional options for contemporary family homes.
This collaboration reflects Altuzarra's passion for design and interiors, extending his creative vision from fashion into home furnishings for children. The collection provides a solution for parents seeking durable, stylish, and imaginative furniture that avoids fleeting trends, offering instead pieces that can evolve with a child's development and integrate seamlessly into a modern home environment.
