Beving & Dall's Leah Darling Takes Us Inside Her Shop
Leah Darling, owner of Beving & Dall, a boutique upholstery shop based in Chardon, Ohio, embarked on her journey into the craft after a significant career shift. Seven years prior, while working at a contemporary art museum in Colorado, Darling sought a change from her then-current profession. Despite lacking formal experience in upholstery, her interest was piqued by a Craigslist advertisement seeking an experienced upholsterer. Having previously engaged in sewing, including crafting her own prom dress from black velvet and champagne pink ostrich feathers, Darling pursued an apprenticeship. This three-year immersive experience provided her with comprehensive training in the art of upholstery.
In 2014, Darling relocated back to Chardon and established Beving & Dall. The inspiration for her business stems from her deep appreciation for the traditional craftsmanship inherent in upholstery, particularly the 'Old World techniques' that can be applied to restoration. A core principle of Beving & Dall is the ability to restore severely damaged furniture pieces. Darling's training emphasizes rebuilding items from their foundational frame outwards, ensuring that even the most deteriorated furniture can be brought back to life. She recounts an instance where a client's grandfather's chair, which was in complete disrepair, was stripped down to its frame, repaired, and meticulously rebuilt, showcasing the extent of her restorative capabilities.
Initially, Darling honed her skills by acquiring pieces from flea markets and antique stores, rebuilding them, and then selling them. However, recognizing a demand for professional reupholstering services, she transitioned her business model to primarily focus on client and commercial projects. This strategic shift proved successful, as her client base grew significantly from approximately five clients in her inaugural year to a point where she now experiences continuous project engagements without much downtime.
Darling's approach to upholstery is characterized by thoroughness and attention to detail. While an average upholsterer might complete a chair in one or two days, Darling dedicates around four days to fully rebuild a chair. This extended timeframe allows her to meticulously address every aspect of the restoration, ensuring that springs and webbing are robust and, when applicable, historically accurate for antique or heirloom pieces. This dedication to quality also extends to understanding the provenance and sentimental value of each piece, fostering a deeper connection with her clients.
In addition to her upholstery services, Darling draws inspiration from her travels to create unique home decor items. Her leather sheepskin pillows, priced between $129 and $170, are influenced by her experiences in the Colorado mountains, featuring neutral browns and grays with white poufs that evoke the natural landscape. Another line of alpaca pillows, priced at $69, reflects her travels to Guatemala, utilizing alpaca fur dyed with fresh fruits to achieve vibrant hues such as magenta and orange. These products reflect her commitment to offering distinctive, one-of-a-kind items that complement her upholstery work and showcase her global inspirations.
