The Scale Collective Brings Tactile Warmth to This Beverly Hills Penthouse
The Beverly Hills Penthouse, perched 39 floors above Los Angeles, offers spectacular views of the local country club and the Pacific Ocean. Designed by The Scale Collective, this project prioritizes sanctuary over spectacle through deliberate material choices, moving away from the typical high-rise aesthetic towards a more grounded and tactile experience. The initial inspiration came from beauty entrepreneur Darya Pishevar, who referenced Pierre Paulin’s Pumpkin Chair, setting the tone for a design focused on warmth and comfort.
Sara Alexander of The Scale Collective anchored the design around two vintage pieces sourced from Los Angeles showrooms: the Little Petra Chair in shearling and the Marenco Sofa. These foundational elements guided the selection of subsequent materials and textures. Unlike conventional glass towers that emphasize verticality with reflective surfaces and cool tones, this penthouse interior adopts an opposing approach. It incorporates materials such as shearling, hair-on-hide, boucle, and mohair, which absorb light and sound, thereby softening the sharp edges often found in modern high-rise environments. The use of walnut and oak for joinery adds a structural warmth without the visual heaviness commonly associated with traditional paneling. This layering of diverse textures and natural wood tones contributes to an ethereal quality within the space.
The design's ethereal effect is not primarily due to airiness but rather to how these carefully chosen materials modulate the intense California sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Farrow & Ball's nuanced neutral paint tones further complement these textural elements, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. Custom collaborations with Los Angeles showrooms, including The Future Perfect, Stahl & Band, and Garde, enabled Alexander to precisely calibrate furniture proportions to suit the expansive volume of the penthouse. An example of this meticulous approach is the HAOS 20.01 armchair, one of only three produced globally in leather, selected for its unique stance and upholstery texture that seamlessly integrates into the overall composition.
Furthermore, a bespoke Apparatus chandelier was designed to overcome the apartment's limited electrical infrastructure while maintaining the project's refined and restrained aesthetic. This custom piece underscores the attention to detail and thoughtful problem-solving employed throughout the design process. The combination of luxurious tactile materials, custom-designed elements, and a muted color palette results in a sophisticated yet comfortable living space that serves as a serene retreat high above the city. The project successfully redefines luxury in a high-rise setting by emphasizing sensory experience and a connection to natural elements rather than overt opulence.
