I tried Thuma's first easy-to-assemble upholstered bed. I love the sleek look, but I miss the under-bed storage.
This review evaluates Thuma's Signature Bed, the brand's initial easy-to-assemble, fully upholstered bed, focusing on its design, assembly process, and user experience. The author, a home and sleep writer, sought to determine if the Signature Bed maintained the durability and simple setup found in Thuma's existing wooden bed frames while offering a softer, upholstered aesthetic. The Signature Bed, launched in February 2025, features a low-profile, minimalist design, utilizing Thuma's signature Japanese joinery for tool-free assembly. This construction method involves interlocking wood joints, eliminating the need for screws or nails, and the wood is kiln-dried for enhanced durability. While previous Thuma beds openly display this joinery, the Signature Bed conceals it for a more streamlined appearance.
The bed is an upholstered platform style, designed to be low to the ground and envelop the mattress by three inches. It is available with either a stain-resistant linen blend, OEKO-TEX Class 2 certified for safety, or wool felt made from 100% recycled materials. Both options come in four neutral colors, such as alabaster or heathered oatmeal. The upholstered sections are padded with foam, providing a comfortable and supportive feel. The extra-wide, felt-lined slats are designed to support a mattress without a box spring, prevent mattress movement, and reduce noise. The frame can support up to 1,500 pounds, including the mattress. The queen-sized frame starts at $1,395, with a headboard increasing the price to nearly $2,200. King and California King sizes are also available, with twin, twin XL, and full sizes planned for future release. The bed stands 11.5 inches off the ground, and the headboard is 36 inches tall. Thuma provides a 100-night trial period with free returns and a lifetime warranty covering manufacturing defects.
Regarding delivery and setup, standard shipping is free, but a premium option for in-home setup costs an additional $295. The author opted for self-assembly, driven by skepticism about the five-minute assembly claim. Delivery involved four large, heavy boxes, which proved challenging to move into the house without assistance, highlighting a potential issue for individuals without help or dealing with narrow spaces. Despite the claim of quick assembly, the process took the author and a partner about 15 minutes to put the bed frame together after unpacking, with the entire process, including unboxing and moving, taking over an hour. This suggests that while tool-free, the overall setup might be more involved than initially advertised, particularly for those without the premium delivery service.
In terms of user experience, the bed provided excellent support, eliminating the squeaking and creaking experienced with a previous bed frame, even with significant weight on it. The upholstered headboard was comfortable for leaning against, and the overall modern aesthetic blended well with existing bedroom decor. The appearance of the headboard was noted to be more pronounced with a thinner mattress. The low-to-the-ground profile required adjustment for the users, and it was pointed out that this might not be ideal for individuals with mobility issues. A significant trade-off is the lack of under-bed storage, a feature some users might miss. Additionally, the frame is two inches wider than the mattress, which could be a concern for bedrooms with limited space. Gaps of two inches between the mattress edge and upholstery expose the slats, which are not visually appealing and pose a risk for small items falling through. Alternatives include Thuma's Classic Bed with a wooden frame and under-bed clearance, and the Essential Bed, a low-profile wooden platform bed. Other brands like Silk and Snow offer similar easy-assembly wooden frames, though with fewer customization options.
In conclusion, the Thuma Signature Bed is recommended for those seeking a modern, minimalist bedroom aesthetic and valuing tool-free assembly and durability. While it offers a sleek look, sturdy support, and comfortable upholstery, potential drawbacks include the low height, lack of under-bed storage, wider frame, and visible gaps between the mattress and upholstery. The bed's 100-night trial and lifetime warranty offer reassurance to potential buyers.
