OPA designs interior of Californian home to resemble clouds
OPA, a San Francisco-based design studio, has undertaken an interior renovation project dubbed 'Softie,' transforming a three-story house near San Francisco into a space that provides a respite from the external world. The design concept centers around incorporating cloud-like forms throughout the home, creating an environment that is fluid, varied, and uninhibited, much like nature itself. This approach challenges conventional architectural rigidity by introducing soft, undulating elements that blur the lines of the home's existing modernist grid.
The 'Softie' design is immediately evident at the entrance, where bulging white steps lead into the house. The studio strategically introduced these softened interventions in key areas to create an overarching ambiance without requiring a complete overhaul of the existing structure. The design is described as a 'mist that has settled unevenly,' with moments of softness appearing unexpectedly.
Key features of the renovation include ceilings that undulate, resembling a thick blanket of clouds. In the entryway, a section of the ceiling has been remolded to droop down, forming a plump, intimate nook for relaxation. This canopy includes amorphous openings that offer views into the adjacent living room. A similar rounded nook is featured in the main bathroom, designed to accommodate a freestanding circular tub. Throughout the corridors, walls subtly bulge outwards, almost entirely enveloping the house's structural columns, and even the handrails beside some stairways have been given a wriggly, organic form.
For the outdoor spaces, an open roof structure made from interlocking aluminum sheets covers the terrace, providing sweeping views of San Francisco's Richardson Bay. This canopy also reflects the cloud-inspired theme. Internally, the cloud-like interventions are constructed from blocks of foam, MDF, and plywood, their shapes initially designed digitally before being fabricated and assembled on-site.
Beyond aesthetics, the renovation also focused on improving the home's energy efficiency. OPA installed solar panels on the roof and replaced all windows and skylights with higher-performance, better-insulated units. Additionally, several doors were replaced with glass panels to maximize natural light and reduce the reliance on artificial illumination.
The Softie project has gained recognition, being shortlisted in the house interior category of the 2021 Dezeen Awards. This project highlights a unique approach to interior design, where architectural elements are reshaped to evoke natural forms, creating a distinctive and comforting living environment.
