Kelly Clarkson's New NYC Talk Show Set Finds Its Inspiration in Music
Kelly Clarkson's Emmy-Award winning talk show, "The Kelly Clarkson Show," has launched its fifth season from a new home in Studio 6A at the historic 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. This move from Los Angeles marks a significant change for the show, with Clarkson expressing a sense of full circle, having performed at 30 Rock earlier in her career. The new season aims to capture the live atmosphere and energy of New York, a departure from its previous setting, even though the show is not performed live. Showrunner and executive producer Alex Duda notes that the cross-country move provides a fresh narrative and injects the city's energy into the program.
The design of the new set, a collaborative effort with award-winning set designer James Pearse Connelly, was conceptualized to blend "laughter, music, and texture." Clarkson desired a set that reflected NYC and provided ample opportunities for her popular "Kellyokes" musical segments. The result is a space that feels like a fusion of Clarkson's personal living room and a relaxed lounge, drawing inspiration from the aesthetic of MTV Unplugged. Key design elements include dark wood accents, a collection of vinyl records, layered rugs, and luxurious fabrics, all contributing to a warm and intimate ambiance.
Despite the NYC studio being slightly smaller than its LA predecessor, Connelly ingeniously expanded the audience capacity to 200 people, the largest in the show's history. He achieved this by incorporating custom benches with built-in performance lighting and an elevated balcony, ensuring that the audience remains close to the action and feels immersed in the show. This design choice enhances the interactive and intimate experience for viewers.
A significant feature of the new set is a permanent spot for Kelly's band, Y'all, led by Jason Halbert. Unlike the LA setup where the band would leave the stage during interviews, they are now an integral part of the entire show. Halbert expresses excitement about being surrounded by other musical talents at 30 Rock, including The Roots, Seth Meyers' band, and SNL, fostering a sense of camaraderie. The set's musical inspiration is evident through elements reminiscent of recording studios, including a dedicated nook with a baby grand piano for intimate performances by Clarkson and Halbert, a setup Clarkson particularly enjoys for its breathable performance environment.
Clarkson's personal design aesthetic has evolved, moving from an earlier preference for all dark colors to a more nuanced approach. Currently, she favors a palette of deep shades, balanced with light accents and strategic pops of color. This philosophy extends to her office and home design, where she prioritizes a light and airy feel, finding that aesthetics profoundly affect her emotionally. She likens her refined approach to singing, advocating for saving intense moments for "little pockets" rather than overdoing it. Viewers can experience the full new set by tuning into "The Kelly Clarkson Show," available in syndication nationwide.
