Gray Davis of Meyer Davis Studio Talks Hospitality on Hello Cindy!
In an interview on 'Hello Cindy!', Gray Davis, co-founder of Meyer Davis Studio, discussed the challenges and innovations within the hospitality design sector amidst changing social norms and a global pandemic. Davis highlighted the accelerated pace of work, where tasks typically spanning a month are now completed in a week, showcasing the industry's rapid adaptation. While acknowledging the efficiency of digital communication for certain meetings, Davis expressed eagerness to return to on-site project management.
The conversation delved into several ongoing and recently completed projects by Meyer Davis Studio. A significant project mentioned is a new hotel in Doha, Qatar, commissioned for the 2022 World Cup. This hotel is designed with unique features, including a lucite rooftop pool that offers a view of swimmers and transforms into a club at night. The hotel's restaurant will feature an open kitchen, extensive greenery in its decor, and a stage for live performances, promising a dynamic dining experience. Despite global challenges, the construction team for this project has maintained momentum, driven by a firm opening date.
Davis also detailed a recently finished grill-focused restaurant located in the family dining area of Harrods, the iconic London department store. As one of 30 restaurants within Harrods, the design team aimed to create an aesthetic that would resonate with its diverse global clientele. The restaurant incorporates pillowed stonework and lacquered reveal details on low ceilings, creating an illusion of increased height. A notable aspect of this project is the inclusion of chairs designed by Meyer Davis Studio in collaboration with Stellar Works, which were originally slated for launch at Salone.
Beyond hospitality, the discussion touched upon a residential project in Manhattan: a townhouse created by rebuilding two Brownstones. Inspired by the Upper East Side, Davis described the aesthetic as 'white, clean, and tailored,' emphasizing a design where 'every time you turn a corner there’s something else there to take your breath away.' Davis concluded by expressing his daily inspiration drawn from his team members during Zoom meetings, highlighting a positive aspect of the current remote work environment. The interview collectively underscored the adaptability, creativity, and resilience of the design industry in navigating contemporary challenges.
