This blog post details a DIY project undertaken by a reader, Vilija Hogan, who transformed an old, worn-out coffee table into a stylish, Hamptons-style upholstered ottoman. The inspiration for this project came from an episode of 'Better Homes and Gardens' featuring Tara Dennis demonstrating a similar transformation. Vilija, who had no prior experience with such makeovers, embarked on the project after watching the segment multiple times to ensure she understood the process. The original coffee table, purchased for $20 from Facebook Marketplace, was in poor condition with a wobbly leg, coffee mug stains on its top, and cobwebs underneath, indicating years of use. Vilija's goal was to create an ottoman that embodied the Hamptons style, characterized by light colors that would easily integrate with various interior décors, and critically, feature tufted/sunken buttons. The transformation process involved several steps. First, the old coffee table was repaired by fixing its wobbly leg and thoroughly cleaned. Following this, the entire table was sanded to remove the old varnish. Two coats of paint primer were applied, with adequate drying time between coats, before two top coats of paint were applied the next day. For the cushioned top, MDF was cut to size, and Clark Rubber provided foam cut to the correct dimensions. A double layer of wadding was laid over the foam and MDF, then tightly stapled down, with excess edges trimmed. The upholstery fabric was then wrapped over the wadding and stapled to the back of the MDF, creating a seamless cushion. Special attention was paid to tightly tucking the corners. To achieve the desired tufted look, holes were drilled into the back of the MDF for button placement. Each button was then sewn into place using a long needle and thick thread, secured tightly to create the sunken effect on the finished product. Finally, the newly upholstered cushion top was drilled and attached to the refurbished table base. Despite facing challenges such as cutting the MDF to size without an electrical saw and precisely measuring button placement to ensure even spacing, Vilija successfully completed the project. The total cost for the makeover was approximately $200, which included the second-hand table, MDF, foam, fabric, buttons, and needles. Vilija expressed particular satisfaction with the final result, noting that it was a significant departure from the original piece and had become a statement item in her bedroom, enjoyed by her children as well.
