Z Table by Hellman-Chang

The Z Table, a prominent piece from Hellman-Chang's Z Line, has gained considerable recognition since its inception. The Z Pedestal received the Best of Year Product Design Award from Interior Design magazine in 2006, and the Z Side Table was listed among the Top 100 Designs of the Decade by Home and Design magazine in 2009. This line has since expanded to include eight distinct products, featured in various high-profile settings, from presidential suites and hotel public spaces, including The Four Seasons, to cinematic and television productions such as Sex and the City 2 and Gossip Girl. Each Z Table is meticulously handcrafted in Hellman-Chang's Brooklyn, NY studio. The creation process begins with the careful selection of solid wood, where attention is paid to grain patterns and the identification of any imperfections like knots or checks. Following selection, the wood undergoes rough milling, involving initial chopping and planing to achieve clean, even surfaces. The opposite sides are then smoothed, and precise 90-degree angles are established using a joiner. After this, the wood is carefully stacked and allowed to air out for several days, a crucial step for climatization. Subsequently, solid plates for the Z Side Table's top and bottom sections are glued together. The legs are then cut to their final dimensions using a saw. Traditional mortise and tenon joinery, executed by hand, ensures the durability and longevity of each Hellman-Chang piece, designed to last for generations. The initial silhouette of the legs is cut using an antique cast iron Tannewitz bandsaw. Special forms are employed to achieve the correct angles and curves on the legs, followed by hand-shaping with various traditional hand tools. The final detailing involves meticulous hand-sanding to achieve a smooth finish. The legs and plates are then assembled and glued using custom-designed glue jigs. Before the finishing process, the entire piece undergoes a final sanding. Upon completion, the Z Side Table emerges as a modern classic, ready for placement in upscale private residences or luxurious hotel lobbies.
