This Clever IKEA Hack Turns Shoe Clutter Into Chic Built-In Storage
Managing shoe clutter in tight hallways presents a common challenge in home organization, especially with traditional shoe racks often occupying excessive space in narrow entryways. The IKEA STÄLL shoe cabinet offers a compact solution, recognized for its shallow depth of just 6 ¾ inches, making it ideal for confined areas. However, to elevate its appearance beyond a standard furniture piece and integrate it seamlessly as a chic, original, built-in feature, a clever DIY hack can be employed. This transformation involves utilizing spare baseboards and paint to create a sophisticated, customized look.
To achieve this elevated aesthetic, the hack involves mounting the STÄLL shoe cabinet and constructing a DIY board and batten frame around and above it. This design method uses wood slats or 1-by-4 lumber to create a visually appealing texture on the wall. The necessary tools for this project include a sander, a saw, a drill, and a nail gun. In addition to the STÄLL shoe cabinet (or multiple units, depending on wall space), materials required are paint that matches the existing wall color and sufficient wood for the board and batten design.
Installation begins with assembling the IKEA shoe cabinets according to the provided instructions. Once assembled, the unit or units are mounted side-by-side onto the entryway wall. Any small gaps between multiple cabinets can be concealed using wood filler to create a unified appearance. Following this, the shoe cabinets are primed and painted to either blend seamlessly with the wall color or, alternatively, painted in a bold, contrasting color to create a focal point in the entryway.
The next step involves measuring and marking equal spacing for the board and batten pattern above and around the mounted shoe cabinets. A level is crucial for ensuring the boards are installed straight. The baseboards are then attached to the wall using a nail gun. For those who may not have existing trim or leftover baseboards, or prefer not to cut them, local hardware stores can cut boards to specified measurements. After the boards are securely in place, wood filler is applied to cover any gaps or nail holes, followed by sanding to achieve a smooth finish. Finally, the newly installed boards are painted to match both the walls and the shoe cabinets, completing the transformation. This method not only provides a stylish solution for shoe clutter but also offers a straightforward alternative to custom-built thin entryway tables, fitting into virtually any small space while adding a touch of bespoke design.
