This Glossy Red Room at MSG Feels Like Being Inside a Can of Paint
The Benjamin Moore Boardroom, a private hospitality space within Madison Square Garden, has undergone a significant transformation led by ELLE DECOR A-List Designer Sasha Bikoff. This redesign is part of Benjamin Moore’s multi-year partnership with the Rangers, and Bikoff's vision was to create a space that celebrates color and sophistication, with red as the central theme. Having grown up in New York and spent countless nights at MSG for various events, Bikoff felt a deep personal connection to the project, aiming to tell a story through her design rather than simply decorate a room.
Bikoff utilized specific Benjamin Moore paint colors to achieve a rich, immersive atmosphere. The ceilings are painted in Classic Burgundy, an ultra-flat finish that imparts deep richness, while the walls are coated in Raspberry Truffle, a high-gloss paint that creates a vibrant, glowing effect under curated lighting. Neon Red is applied to the millwork and railings, providing an electrifying accent that unifies the color scheme. Bikoff emphasized the use of high-gloss paint to make the colors pop, describing the finish as so rich it feels like candy. This technique, known as color drenching, was crucial for creating a “moody, sexy, European vibe,” enveloping visitors in a solid, glossy, pattern-free environment that feels like a jewel box or swirling wet paint.
The redesign extended beyond paint to include custom millwork and collaborations with Cosentino for countertops and tabletops. These surfaces feature a rich chocolate brown with gold and white veining, offering a subtle complement to the red tones without introducing harsh contrasts. Lighting played an equally vital role in the transformation. Bikoff considered lighting almost as important as paint, incorporating chrome fixtures from Visual Comfort & Co. to add sparkle and provide a cool contrast to the warm reds. Glow lighting and cove lighting were strategically positioned to enhance the shimmer and vibrancy of the red hues, making the space feel dynamic and alive.
The project reflects Sasha Bikoff’s distinctive design philosophy, characterized by boldness, refinement, playfulness, and thoughtfulness. Her design for the Benjamin Moore Boardroom embodies her personal style and her deep affection for New York City, aiming to create a space that mirrors the city's energy. The transformation of the boardroom into a glamorous and colorful destination showcases Bikoff’s ability to infuse a space with character and a compelling narrative, resulting in a design that is both iconic and memorable, much like Madison Square Garden itself.
