Designer Kitchen Cabinets in Houston
The cost of updating kitchens is continuously increasing, with a significant kitchen remodel, including cabinet and appliance replacement, seeing a 10% to 14% rise in mid-2021 compared to 2020, as per the U.S. OLA Kitchen Cabinetry Cooking Area Trends Study. A major remodel for a smaller kitchen now costs $35,000, while larger kitchens (over 250 square feet) can cost $50,000. Minor kitchen remodels have also increased by 25% to $10,000. These price increases mark the fourth consecutive year of rising expenditures, largely due to labor shortages and pandemic-related cost spikes for materials.
Despite the rising costs, homeowners are investing in kitchen remodels. The kitchen island has become a central feature, now often stretching seven feet long and serving as a popular space for studying and working from home. Homeowners are also opting for high-end materials such as engineered quartz and granite countertops, designer lighting, and beverage refrigerators. The study highlights that major structural alterations, including changes to layout, systems, and walls, are common, often requiring professional help.
The L-shape layout remains the most popular choice for kitchen redesigns (40%), followed by the U-shape (31%) and the galley style (13%). Interestingly, fewer people are removing interior walls to create open-plan kitchens or installing double doors for outdoor access compared to previous years. The primary motivations for remodeling are having the necessary funds and the need to repair worn-out kitchens.
In terms of design and colors, the transitional style continues to be the top choice for renovated kitchens, increasing to 25% from 21%. Contemporary style has surpassed modern as the second most preferred, while the farmhouse look has seen a decline. White remains the dominant color for kitchen cabinets (41%), backsplashes (40%), and walls (32%). Gray is the most common alternative, especially for walls (27%), flooring (13%), and backsplashes (11%). Accent colors like blue, black, and green are being introduced for kitchen island cabinets to create visual interest.
For flooring, stained or unstained hardwood is the most popular choice (25%), though vinyl or resilient flooring is gaining popularity, almost doubling since 2019 to 23%, surpassing ceramic and porcelain tile (19%). Countertops are a key area for upgrades, with over 90% of homeowners updating them. Engineered quartz (42%) and granite (24%) are the most popular materials, with appearance, durability, and ease of cleaning being top considerations over cost. White is increasingly chosen for countertops (39%), while gray is declining. For backsplashes, ceramic or porcelain tile still dominates (56%), followed by marble (11%) and engineered quartz (9%). Many homeowners extend the backsplash from the countertop to the upper cabinets or range hood.
Most remodeling homeowners replace kitchen cabinets, with solid wood being the primary material choice (76%), followed by plywood (20%) and medium-density fiberboard (14%). Shaker-style cabinet doors are gaining popularity (64%). Custom and semi-custom cabinets are also favored. White is the most popular color for main kitchen cabinets (41%). Specialty organizers such as deep drawers (40%) and pullout waste/recycling options (63%) are increasingly being integrated. Kitchen islands are becoming longer and brighter with new light fixtures, often serving for entertaining, socializing, and work. Rectangular islands are the most common shape. Many islands feature contrasting cabinet colors or door styles from the main cabinetry. Other upgrades include additional sinks, faucets, and indoor doors. Pendant lights are popular for kitchen lighting, and under-cabinet and recessed lights continue to be preferred. Most updated kitchens also include new decor, such as bar stools, wall art, and window coverings.
