This Cozy Cabin in the British Countryside Has Everything You Need for a Relaxing Weekend
Out of the Valley, a design and build company, recently completed the Holly Water Cabin, now available for rent in Devon, England. The cabin is situated on a 4.5-acre meadow on a working farm. The clients desired a secluded retreat that integrated with its natural surroundings, offering views of the meadow and an oak forest, while prioritizing a minimal environmental impact. The design brief included a mono-pitched cabin with ample outdoor space for a bath and a seating area, allowing occupants to witness the sunrise from their bed.
Rupert McKelvie, founder of Out of the Valley, emphasized their design principles: creating timeless structures that respect the environment, harmonize with nature, and promote a better way of living. The cabin's structure is framed with Douglas fir, featuring cedar cladding for exterior walls and larch for the veranda. All wood materials were sourced from a local sawmill, contributing to the project's sustainable approach. The simple silhouette and shed roofline intentionally highlight the natural materials used.
To minimize ground disturbance and material usage, the cabin is raised on a concrete pier foundation, which can be easily removed if necessary and elevates the structure above ground level. This construction method aligns with the company's commitment to avoiding processes and materials with high carbon emissions during production or on-site use. Inside, plant-based insulation made from jute and wood fibers enhances energy efficiency. The interior walls are finished with a natural clay render, a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plaster, which also helps regulate humidity and temperature.
The 644-square-foot cabin features an open-concept layout. The kitchen is positioned along the back wall, and a sleeping niche and bathroom are discreetly tucked into a corner. The living space extends onto the larch veranda, which includes a copper tub for outdoor bathing, promoting an al fresco living experience. The cabin is heated by a wood stove, and its water supply comes from a well. Currently connected to the electrical grid, future plans include installing solar panels, with the grid connection allowing excess solar power to be fed back. Rental income generated from the Holly Water Cabin will be used by the owners to rewild the surrounding 4.5-acre meadow.
