I live with three dogs and host often —this small-space friendly Article sofa bed hasn't let me down
The Article Riley Sofa Bed, an 84-inch block-frame sofa with a memory foam mattress, has been tested for its suitability as a small-space solution for accommodating overnight guests in a multi-pet household. The review focuses on its design, delivery, comfort, sleeping experience, and durability, especially regarding pet interactions.
From a design perspective, the Riley sofa bed is available as an 84-inch sofa or a sectional with storage, both offering a queen-size memory foam mattress. Its simple, blocky design allows it to integrate with various interior design themes, functioning as a utilitarian piece rather than a statement one. The frame is constructed from solid pine and plywood, complemented by a steel mechanism for the bed, and the cushions are filled with foam and polyester fiber. For households not requiring a sofa bed, the Riley series also includes a standard sofa, a loveseat, and a storage sofa where the seat cushion lifts to reveal hidden storage. The sofa bed is offered in eight fabric choices and three velvets, predominantly performance fabrics known for their durability and stain resistance, a significant advantage for pet owners. The Napa Quartz performance fabric version of the sofa configuration was specifically tested for this review.
Delivery and setup were efficient, with the sofa arriving within two weeks and being placed in the living room by two delivery personnel in approximately 15 minutes, with packaging removed. No assembly was required beyond cushion arrangement. However, the weight and bulk of the sofa made white glove delivery a practical option, which was utilized. Standard shipping costs $49 for front-door delivery, while in-room delivery costs $119, and white glove service is $199.
Regarding comfort, the sofa is characterized as firm yet not overly plush, suitable for activities like gaming, eating, and lounging without objects getting lost in the cushions. Its 23-inch seat depth promotes comfortable seating. A notable drawback is the low backrest, which, without an additional pillow, prevents full head support and can lead to discomfort during extended lounging.
The conversion from sofa to bed is straightforward, involving the removal of cushions and extension of the frame. The 4.5-inch memory foam mattress is described as thin yet plush, offering good bounce without the common discomforts associated with traditional sofa beds. It retains less heat compared to a typical mattress. However, the bed's motion isolation is poor, and edge support is weak, with the joint where the bed folds dipping if weight is applied to the edge. Despite these points, it is considered a superior sleeping option compared to futons, inflatable mattresses, or cots.
Durability was rigorously tested in a household with three dogs. Over four months, the sofa exhibited no signs of wear, creaking, or wobbling despite daily use by the pets, including scratching and jumping. The tight weave and stain-resistant coating of the fabric proved effective against various spills and muddy paws, with most stains easily wiped away. Potential downsides include the firm cushions and low backrest, which may not appeal to those who prefer plush seating or require head support. Its small footprint limits seating to three people, potentially making it cramped. Additionally, tall individuals may find the 84-inch length restrictive for horizontal lounging. The return policy allows for 30 days but requires the customer to cover shipping costs, and the one-year warranty is shorter than some competitors. Alternatives mentioned include the Koala Sofa Bed, the Coddle Switch, and Joybird sleeper sofas, each offering different features and price points.
