Wall cupboards are out of favour – so what do consumers want instead?
The trend in kitchen design is moving away from traditional wall cupboards, as homeowners increasingly prefer designs that offer a more open, light, and aesthetically pleasing environment. While the removal of wall units enhances the visual appeal of a kitchen, it also poses a significant challenge for designers: how to maintain adequate and functional storage without compromising the newfound spaciousness. This shift necessitates innovative solutions for storage to ensure that kitchens remain highly practical and organized.
Blum UK has been at the forefront of addressing this design dilemma by advocating for deeper, wider drawers as an effective alternative to upper cabinetry. Amanda Hughes, Blum UK’s customer experience manager, highlights that while consumers often request more storage, their true need is for accessible, visible, and organized solutions that keep items within easy reach. The Blum Experience Centre demonstrates how these larger drawers can maximize storage efficiency and improve accessibility, creating a more user-friendly kitchen without the visual bulk of wall units.
Beyond just maximizing lower unit storage, designers are exploring various approaches to utilize wall space effectively while keeping the kitchen feeling expansive. Feature glass units offer a stylish and practical compromise. Richard Turner, Pronorm’s national sales manager for UK & Ireland, notes that these units are designed to appear less 'blocky,' helping to open up the kitchen and create an illusion of greater space. When their contents are thoughtfully arranged, glazed units provide valuable additional storage that contributes to the kitchen's aesthetic.
Open shelving represents another popular, albeit more minimalist, option. This solution is ideal for clients who prefer a clean, uncluttered look and are adept at curating their belongings. For open shelving to be successful, maintaining minimal contents is crucial to avoid a chaotic appearance. Several manufacturers are also introducing comprehensive shelving systems. For example, Rotpunkt offers wall panelling storage systems that integrate seamlessly with their kitchen ranges, allowing for customizable organization of items like books, utensils, tablets, and smartphones. Scavolini’s Mia by Carlo Cracco kitchen exemplifies this with a wall panel featuring accessories such as open shelves, herb and spice containers, bowls, bottle racks, and an overhead hanging structure.
Cage structures are another contemporary solution for upper storage. These designs offer a lighter, less obtrusive aesthetic compared to traditional cupboards, helping to define spaces without making them feel closed off. Rotpunkt’s ceiling frames, for instance, provide a canopy-style storage system that optimizes floor, wall, and ceiling space, while a Day True scheme uses such structures to visually separate living and cooking zones in open-plan layouts.
Despite the decline in popularity of wall cupboards, tall units continue to be a favored storage solution. These units allow designers to create a seamless floor-to-ceiling aesthetic, providing ample storage capacity while maintaining a sleek, integrated look, particularly where space permits. This combination of innovative storage solutions ensures that contemporary kitchens can be both beautiful and highly functional, catering to modern preferences for light, open, and organized living spaces.
