Baina and Estudio Persona’s design-led towels are going to elevate your bathroom
Curated towel brand Baina has collaborated with Estudio Persona to launch 'Umbra,' a limited-edition collection designed to enhance the bathing experience. Founded in 2019 by Bailey Meredith and Anna Fahey, Baina aims to introduce design-led color palettes and patterns to the bathing space through 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton toweling. This material choice reflects a conscious decision for softness, durability, and biodegradability, ensuring towels are plush yet quick-drying.
Over five years, Baina has consistently drawn inspiration from various artistic and architectural references, producing aesthetically pleasing bathroom textiles such as towels, robes, and mats. These products are ethically manufactured in Portugal, emphasizing longevity and sustainability. The collaboration with Estudio Persona, a Los Angeles-based design studio founded by Emiliana Gonzalez and Jessie Young in 2015, marks a new chapter for Baina. Estudio Persona is known for creating furniture and lighting with bold silhouettes and neutral tones, utilizing raw materials like wood, leather, steel, and brass, as seen in their 'Medano' and 'Ruban' collections.
The 'Umbra' collection features four plush towels, developed using a subtle jacquard technique and an ombre color palette including 'Stone,' 'Sand,' 'Rust,' and 'Bark.' This design choice is inspired by the interplay of light and shadow, which also lends the collection its name. The founders of both brands elaborated on the collaboration, explaining that the idea originated from Baina's interest in co-creating a toweling collection through the lens of a design studio. Both teams found a natural fit due to their shared philosophy of simplicity, refinement, and a mutual appreciation for natural materials and mindful craftsmanship.
The architectural theme of light filtering through buildings was a primary inspiration for the 'Umbra' collection, particularly how the sun's changing position affects shadows. The collection comprises a bath sheet, bath towel, hand towel, and bath mat, chosen to create a sense of continuity rather than as separate items. The design employs lines to create an illusion of ombre, with their separation gradually altering to form transitions between the towels. This marks Baina's first complete toweling set in a collaboration, allowing Estudio Persona to conceptualize how the four pieces would integrate into the bathing space, adding warmth and depth.
Fabrication of the 'Umbra' towels involves a two-ply twist construction, which enhances strength, stability, and absorbency by twisting two cotton fibers together. This technique ensures moisture is drawn into the towel efficiently. The collection is also Baina's first to feature entirely cut pile, organic cotton velour, providing a plush texture and velvety soft surface. The jacquard technique further contributes to the design by contrasting raised blocks of terry against the base fabric, creating tonal variations that mimic the effects of light and shadow. The colour palette, consisting of natural earthy shades, was carefully chosen to reinforce the visual story of light and its absence.
Both brands found the collaborative process enriching. Baina noted that Estudio Persona, being new to textile design, challenged their understanding of terry and toweling, pushing creative boundaries. Estudio Persona, in turn, appreciated the learning experience of working with textiles, a material different from their usual volumetric shapes, and the tangible prototyping process involved in bringing the collection to life. The limited-edition 'Umbra' collection will be available from September 4, 2024, via Baina’s online store, ssense.com, and select retailers.
