How to use pieces from around the world to create a fine English bedroom
Interior designer Sophie Paterson details her approach to transforming a master bedroom in a Chelsea townhouse, focusing on a global-inspired aesthetic that remains distinctly English. The project began with a client who actively participated in the design process and sought a less overtly 'designed' feel. A central element for the room was a four-poster Ralph Lauren bed, which had been in storage awaiting the right setting. Paterson's design philosophy for this project was to establish a layered scheme of warm, neutral shades, with an antique Persian rug serving as the foundational inspiration for both color and style.
Another significant piece contributing to the room's character is an armchair from the Italian brand Poltrona Frau, upholstered in a rich, honey-colored leather. This color choice, which was made prior to its widespread popularity, has since been recognized by Dulux as a prominent trend. The lacquered finish of the four-poster bed is complemented by a high-gloss dressing table and stool from Graham & Green. Bespoke bedside tables, designed by Justin van Breda, were custom-made to precisely fit the space and match the height of the bed.
The article also provides a curated selection of ten additional objects that can assist readers in blending international influences with a traditional English home aesthetic. These items include a decorative ginger jar from Cowshed Interiors, a Safari Boutique open wardrobe from Houseology, and Kathryn’s candlestick by Julian Chichester. Other suggestions are a Keraton carved four-poster bed from Lombok, a Shikari planter’s armchair by Mufti, and a Misalaba ceramic stool from OKA. The list continues with a Hampton Dove Grey console table from Orchid, a large tapered cabinet from Shimu, a Rattan Turkic lamp with a Coolie shade from Soane Britain, and an Octagonal Star table from Vaughan. These chosen items demonstrate a range of styles and origins, offering practical examples for those looking to incorporate diverse cultural elements into their interior design while maintaining an overall English sensibility.
