What if your side table cared for you?
The Bable side table, designed by industrial designer Abin Rajendran, redefines the concept of a home robot by integrating seamlessly into domestic life as a subtle, emotionally intelligent companion. This innovative design, one of the winning projects from DesignWanted’s 'Ideas For Business' open design competition, challenges traditional notions of robotics, emphasizing presence and reliability over overt spectacle. Rather than showcasing advanced technology through flashy aesthetics, Bable adopts an unassuming, familiar appearance, resembling a well-crafted side table that prioritizes harmony with human rhythms.
The design ethos of Bable is rooted in the idea that technology in a home environment should be supportive and integrated, mirroring human behavior. This philosophy is evident in its operational cycle: Bable rests and recharges at night, with charging mechanisms discreetly integrated into its base, eliminating visible cables or docking stations. This shared rest cycle fosters a subtle emotional connection, portraying Bable not as a mere device, but as an integral part of the home that adapts to the user’s natural routine. Its nocturnal function includes a downward-facing ring light that casts a gentle glow on the floor, providing intuitive spatial awareness without being intrusive or distracting.
During the day, Bable continues its unobtrusive support. It features a small, built-in drawer for convenient access to daily essentials. Ambient sensors and subtle notifications offer assistance without demanding attention, reinforcing its role as an integrated companion. Rajendran's vision for Bable is a companion robot for the next generation, one that builds emotional bonds through consistent presence and reliability rather than complex interactions. This approach contrasts with the common perception of robots as highly visible, metallic, and sensor-laden machines, instead proposing a future where technology gently enhances daily life without disruption.
Bable's development emerged from the 'Ideas For Business' competition, which sought to reimagine the side table—a ubiquitous yet often overlooked piece of furniture. The competition, launched by DesignWanted in May 2025, received over 150 international submissions. Bable was selected for its innovative response to evolving domestic needs, valuing empathy and quiet presence over mere efficiency. The design’s success lies in its ability to transform a conventional object into a discreet, intelligent entity that intuitively supports human routines, demonstrating that meaningful technology can be soft-spoken and deeply attuned to human rhythms.
