Ong Shunmugam Launches High-End Rattan Furniture; Makes Staying Home Cooler & Prettier
Ong Shunmugam, a fashion designer known for her modern cheongsams, has expanded her homeware offerings with the introduction of the Suvarnabumi Rattan collection. This new line of rattan furniture builds upon her earlier Suvarnabumi tableware range, bringing a distinctive blend of traditional craft and contemporary design to home interiors. The collection aims to provide luxurious furniture pieces with lavish Asian elements, suitable for enhancing home comfort and aesthetics.
The Suvarnabumi Rattan collection differentiates itself by incorporating surprising elements such as fabrics and batik, which are signature motifs in Ong Shunmugam's fashion designs. This approach ensures that while the furniture respects the traditional style and craftsmanship of rattan, it also features a modern and luxurious appeal that is familiar to fans of the designer. The collection is crafted in Malaysia by veteran artisans who utilize various Malaysia-harvested rattan species, including Rotan Manau, Rotan Mantang, and Rotan Sega. These natural materials are thoughtfully combined with mixed mediums, such as Indonesian batik and synthetic rattan, and Chinese jacquard fabrics.
Priscilla Ong Shunmugam articulated that the brand's objective was to deviate from common rattan furniture references by elevating design value and differentiation. This involved creating pieces without existing templates, requiring original drawings and challenging craftsmen to build from scratch. The integration of foreign elements, particularly fabrics and batik, and the request for technically demanding mergers of materials and structures, pushed the boundaries of traditional rattan craftsmanship. The designer highlighted that this process resulted in technical triumphs that consciously bridge gaps created by time, geography, and cultural matrices.
The collection features a variety of items, each designed with meticulous attention to detail and aesthetic appeal. The Dining Chair, available in Natural and Black finishes, is priced at $599. The black version particularly features a sleek finish and a jacquard upholstered backrest, prompting consideration of how it might complement a matching dress. Another significant piece is the Screen, priced at $1,499, which serves as a double-sided divider featuring contrast batik upholstered panelling on each side, evoking a vintage tropical art deco mood. The collection also includes practical yet stylish home accessories such as a Basket for $199, a Hoop Planter for $179, Standing Planters ranging from $279 to $299, and a Tray for $399. The Tray is a natural rattan piece with a handwoven base depicting an indigenous Iban pattern, suitable for display, serving, floral arrangements, or gifting.
All pieces in the Suvarnabumi Rattan collection are available for purchase through the Ong Shunmugam website. The launch signifies Ong Shunmugam's deeper foray into the homeware sector, offering unique, high-end rattan furniture that blends cultural heritage with contemporary design principles, providing sophisticated options for home decoration.
