Eight calming home interiors with earthy finishes
This article showcases a curated selection of residential interiors featuring walls treated with a variety of earthy-hued plasters, renders, and paints. These wall coatings, traditionally used for external weather protection, are increasingly employed indoors to add decorative texture and a calming aesthetic. The collection highlights eight such examples from residences located in different parts of the world, including India and the UK.
The first example is Datum House in the UK, designed by architecture studio DHaus. This Victorian maisonette in north London features an extension bathed in natural light from a full-width skylight. The interior design emphasizes a minimalist material palette, where earthy plaster walls are thoughtfully combined with concrete and oak elements that form a distinct datum around the base of the living space.
Next, the Arch House in the UK, by Polysmiths, incorporates a Mediterranean influence through its structural arches and a mottled lime plaster finish. Polysmiths reconfigured the previously dark and outdated interiors of this London home, creating bright, interconnected living and work areas with numerous openings and light-colored walls.
The Plaster House, also in the UK, by Sonn, extensively uses plaster finishes both inside and out. Located in Hackney, London, this home extension predominantly features neutral-toned plaster, with a contrasting pale green plaster used in the bedroom to add a subtle variation.
Taper House, a London extension designed by Merrett Houmøller Architects and All & Nxthing, draws inspiration from Moroccan riads. This angular, skylit extension is characterized by clay-plaster walls, exposed brickwork, and tile floors, all utilizing "natural earth-based materials" to evoke a Mediterranean feel.
Casa da Encosta in Portugal, by SIA Arquitectura, utilizes lime render to coat the various volumes comprising the house. The studio aimed to reflect the sandy coastal landscape of Grândola, Portugal, by employing a material palette of wood and lime render throughout both the exterior and interior of the home.
In India, Stone House by Sketch Design Studio features recycled stone walls rendered in mud and lime plaster. This rural farmhouse in Rajasthan combines clay-painted walls with exposed stone and a distinctive filler-slab ceiling, creating a harmonious and natural interior.
Mayalogili, another Indian residence refurbished by Nowhere, showcases plaster made from brick and marble dust. The exterior is coated in a rough red-brown plaster, while the interior is similarly finished with various plasters derived from on-site materials, maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
Finally, Putney Riverside in the UK, renovated and extended by VATRAA, features an extension built with terracotta-coloured concrete. The interior of this London home preserves original details, including existing plasterwork, which was meticulously repaired using a "distinguishable but complementary" lime plaster, blending old and new elements seamlessly.
