This cinematic Italian-style villa in Los Angeles took inspiration from Call Me By Your Name
Tiffany Howell, founder of the Los Angeles-based house design studio Night Palm, was tasked with creating a calming and inspirational space for a screenwriter couple and their newborn son in a 1930s Mediterranean revival property in Hancock Park, LA. The project, termed Villa Grecco, aimed to evoke a romantic European ambiance, drawing inspiration from 17th and 18th-century aesthetics with a modern twist, while offering a retreat from the typical glitz of Los Angeles. The property's rectangular floor plan and lush gardens were maintained, with reception rooms featuring French doors that open to greenery on the ground floor.
Howell's design scheme for Villa Grecco is characterized by a harmonious palette of soft blues, greens, and golds, reminiscent of the smoky hues seen in Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 film "Call Me By Your Name," which is set in a 17th-century Italian villa in Lombardy. This cinematic influence aimed to provide an inspiring environment for the writer-owners. Further inspiration was drawn from an iconic Gucci floral editorial, with each area of the home meticulously designed to be refined and eye-catching. The designer emphasized creating a cinematic and romantic atmosphere to foster creativity for the residents.
The interiors incorporate a rich mix of textures and nature motifs, adding sophistication throughout. The main living space features wallpaper designed to resemble a 17th-century tapestry, seamlessly blending with the outdoor vegetation to create an immersive, forest-like feeling. Sculptural light fixtures, described as jewelry for the rooms, are strategically placed in various nooks. The dining area showcases a blend of vintage elements, including 1940s-era chairs and a vintage Murano crystal chandelier, which, combined with moody wall colors, create a cozy and chic tapestry accented by golden and amber tones.
Each room in Villa Grecco is imbued with its own distinct personality while maintaining overall cohesion. For instance, the reading room is designed to evoke the ambiance of a Scottish castle with deep green tones and a mirror inspired by Sleeping Beauty, transporting inhabitants to another era with a modern touch. In contrast to the often moody common areas, the kitchen features an earthy plaster pink hue on elegant Shaker-style cabinetry, creating a cosseting and warm feel. Howell’s approach focused on creating interactive sensory experiences, blending intentional visuals and lush materials with natural scents from plants and flowers, resulting in a poetic alchemy that perfectly balances exquisiteness and functionality, fulfilling the owners' vision for their home.
