Aqara LED Strip T1 (review)

The smart home market features a wide array of LED strips, with Aqara introducing its own LED Strip T1, offering distinct advantages for HomeKit users. The T1 differentiates itself with its ability to display multiple colors along its length and support for Adaptive Lighting. Packaging for the Aqara LED Strip T1 follows a minimalist design, highlighting the product on the front. Key information on the packaging includes the necessity of an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub for operation, as the strip utilizes Zigbee 3.0 protocol. The rear of the package provides suggestions for integrating the strip with other Aqara devices for automation purposes. Specifications detailed on the packaging indicate a rated power of 5W/m, a color temperature range of RGB+2700K-6500K, and physical dimensions of 2000 x 12 x 2.8 mm for the 2m strip. The box includes the 2m light strip, a power adapter, a controller, a user manual, and two region-specific plug adapters. The strip can be cut at indicated points, and it features separate LEDs for cool white, warm white, and RGB, with six LEDs per zone. Key features of the Aqara LED Strip T1 include multi-color and tuneable white options, gradient lighting effects, Matter support (via an updated Aqara hub), smart home automations, HomeKit Adaptive Lighting, and a music sync mode. The inclusion of gradient lighting effects allows for ten distinct colors along a two-meter strip, offering more granular control compared to some other multi-color strips. Matter support is facilitated through an Aqara hub that has been updated for Matter compatibility, similar to how Philips Hue lights require a bridge for HomeKit. Adaptive Lighting, which dynamically adjusts white light color temperature throughout the day to support circadian rhythms, is another significant feature, placing the T1 among a select few light strips offering this functionality. The physical controller for the T1 includes buttons for power, cycling through white and color modes, and activating/deactivating music sync. In Apple Home, the T1 appears as a standard light accessory, allowing for brightness and color adjustments, as well as enabling Adaptive Lighting. Direct control over multiple colors simultaneously is not available within the Apple Home app, a limitation of the HomeKit framework itself. The Aqara Home app provides more extensive control over the T1. The main page offers controls for power, brightness, dynamic scene presets, music sync, and light grouping. Users can select colors via an RGB Palette, fine-tune them with an RGB Spectrum, or adjust white light color temperature with the Tuneable White option. The app also allows for the creation of custom static and dynamic effects. Static effects enable individual coloring of up to 22 zones (with extensions), while dynamic effects offer various animation presets like Breathing, Rainbow, Chasing, and Jumping, with options to customize color selection and speed. A notable advantage of the Aqara T1 is the ability to export Aqara Scenes directly to Apple HomeKit. This feature allows users to create multi-color presets or dynamic effects within the Aqara app and then transfer them to HomeKit, enabling their use in standard HomeKit automations. This capability addresses the HomeKit limitation of not directly supporting multi-color light strip effects. When exporting, the scene appears in the same room as the selected Aqara hub within the Home app. The T1 performs well as accent lighting, with accurate color reproduction across red, green, blue, yellow, and pink. The separate LEDs for cool and warm white allow for effective Adaptive Lighting. While the T1 is compatible with all major smart home platforms, its 10 zones per 2m strip (with 6 LEDs per zone) are fewer compared to some competitors like the Onvis Kameleon, which offers 20 zones with 3 LEDs per zone, potentially impacting the smoothness of animated effects. However, the T1's Zigbee protocol offers a reliable connection and reduces reliance on Wi-Fi devices, which can be a significant benefit for smart home enthusiasts looking to minimize network congestion. The Aqara LED Strip T1 is considered a strong contender in the smart light strip market due to its robust features, especially the advanced controls available in the Aqara app and the HomeKit scene export functionality, despite having fewer zones than some alternatives. Its Zigbee 3.0 connection, Matter compatibility (via hub), Adaptive Lighting, and customization options make it an appealing choice for users seeking a versatile and integrated lighting solution within their smart home ecosystem. #Aqara #HomeKit #LightStrip #Matter #Zigbee #AdaptiveLighting #SmartHome #LEDLighting #Review #Aqara #HomeKit #LightStrip #Matter #Zigbee #AdaptiveLighting #SmartHome #LEDLighting #Review
