Ghia House’s Fresco-Like, Hand-Painted Mural Only Looks Like Plaster
The dining room of Ghia House, the office of Ghia founder Melanie Masarin, features a captivating hand-painted mural that evokes the aesthetic of a classical fresco. This collaborative project between Masarin and artist Xavier Donnelly, who have known each other since their college days, transformed the space into a 'sun-drenched, craggy, rocky summer-beach experience.' Donnelly, also the creative director for hospitality group Ash, drew inspiration from the historical richness and natural beauty of Italy and France, aiming to create a lighthearted and joyous atmosphere filled with 'nymphs and gods and creatures and characters inhabiting this landscape and partaking in a joyous party.'
The artistic process began with the walls primed in Backdrop’s Disco Nap paint, serving as the foundation for the mural. Donnelly opted for acrylics and paintbrushes, eschewing a detailed sketch in favor of an organic, intuitive approach. The mural was completed over an intense long weekend while the house was empty, allowing the artist to fully immerse himself in the creative flow with music and Ghia's non-alcoholic beverages. A key technique employed to achieve the fresco-like appearance was the super dilution of the paints combined with a dry brush application. This method created a faded, plaster-like effect, mimicking the texture and visual depth of traditional frescoes without the need for actual wet plaster.
Initially, Donnelly had installed a lantern in the dining room as a housewarming gift, but later decided it didn't quite fit the emerging aesthetic of the mural and relocated it elsewhere in the house. He advises that while anyone can attempt such a mural, investing in a professional artist provides a significant and personalized impact. Donnelly also noted that he is developing a collection of wallpapers with Backdrop, some of which are inspired by this mural, offering an alternative for those who desire a similar look. Melanie Masarin's reaction to the finished mural was overwhelmingly positive, despite Donnelly's initial nerves about her seeing the completed work. The mural successfully captures the intended mystical, legendary quality, infusing the dining room with a unique and celebratory ambiance, making it a standout feature of the Ghia House.
