An $8 Home Depot Buy Was Pivotal to This Lopsided Hallway’s Checkered Mural
Shadina Soondar, an L.A. creative and human resources consultant, transformed her previously lopsided, 9-by-3-foot hallway into a vibrant, checkered mural. Soondar, who enjoys painting and making her space her own, decided to tackle this project in her first solo apartment after having been limited to her bedroom walls in a shared living situation. Her previous projects included colorful accent arches, but the hallway, broken up by three doors, called for a more precise approach.
Inspired by DIY posts on Instagram, Soondar chose a checker print design. She used a level, pencil, and painter’s tape to create 8-by-8-inch square stencils, leveraging the existing 8-inch space between doorframes. To ensure precision and prevent sloppy work, she spread the painting process over a week, meticulously painting each square by hand, rather than attempting to complete it in a single day.
A key technique Soondar employed for achieving crisp, clean lines was painting over the painter’s tape with the base wall color (white) before applying the desired hue. This method, she found, effectively prevented color bleeding, resulting in sharp edges for each square.
For the color palette, Soondar opted for purple, specifically Gin Blossoms by Backdrop, a shade she already had from a previous project. She draws color inspiration from sunsets, incorporating blues, pinks, and oranges. The Art Deco and Miami-inspired pastel and pattern-filled aesthetic extended to the cabinet doors at the end of the hallway, where she created circular designs using Backdrop’s Stromboli Chess Club paint. She cleverly traced an old lampshade to achieve perfect circles and then replaced the old hardware with checkered wooden knobs from HomeGoods.
To complete the look and address the hallway's lopsided nature, Soondar added an orange border in Glidden’s Freckles. This stripe helped to visually unify the space, as she was concerned that extending the checker pattern all the way to the 8-foot ceilings would accentuate the unevenness of the apartment. While the colors were chosen partly due to availability, Soondar encourages others to embrace bold colors over neutral ones if it feels right, emphasizing that personal preference should guide design choices, regardless of conventional expectations.
The article also highlights two essential tools for this DIY project: an 8-Piece High-Density Polyester Knit Paint Tray Kit and Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape, both available at Home Depot, with the latter being the "$8 Home Depot Buy" mentioned in the title. These tools facilitated the precise execution of the checkered mural and the clean lines that defined Soondar's hallway transformation.
