Surrounded by a Marshy Forest, This Fortress-Like Home Asks $1.7M in Virginia
This blog post showcases a modernist-style home recently listed for $1.7 million in Williamsburg, Virginia. The property, situated on nearly ten wooded acres overlooking a small waterway and marshland, was designed by renowned local architect and University of Virginia School of Architecture professor W.G. Clark. Constructed in 2005, the concrete block structure offers a stark contrast to other homes in the area, largely hidden from view due to its secluded location.
The current owner, Mark Segal, purchased the property in 2018 and undertook a two-year renovation to update the interior while meticulously honoring Clark's original vision and drawing inspiration from modernist icons such as Pierre Chareau and Le Corbusier. Segal, a fan of European modernism from the 1930s, was attracted to the home's strong reflection of beloved designs and its private, waterfront lot. The renovation aimed to modernize the finishes while preserving many of Clark's custom features, including built-in cabinetry and workspaces. He notes that the interplay of materials and natural light creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The two-story residence features imposing 17-inch-thick concrete walls, engineered with an air gap for insulation, which are visually balanced by expansive glass block windows. These windows not only flood the interior with natural light but also provide scenic views of the surrounding property. The double-height living and dining area is illuminated by custom Hope’s steel windows, partially set with 12-inch Corning glass blocks. Segal updated elements like the massive 17-foot-tall room divider separating the kitchen and dining area, which was previously a lighter, natural-colored stain.
The 3,000-square-foot home includes two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. One bathroom features Clark's modernist vanity design, incorporating repurposed steel girders, and a reproduction 1930s bathtub custom-cast in England. A mezzanine level overlooking the dining area offers the potential for a third bedroom. The kitchen retains Clark's original cabinetry and stainless steel countertops, complemented by updated appliances and a walk-in pantry. One of the bedrooms boasts a 16-foot-long solid mahogany workstation, an original feature, with natural light provided by a glass-block window overlooking the backyard. A library/den also benefits from a full-height, glass-block window.
Outdoors, a blue stone patio connects the main house to a screened pavilion and storage area, both designed by W.G. Clark in 2010. The 9.98-acre lot encompasses a large lawn, a fenced area suitable for pets or gardening, and extensive natural forest. The property boasts 600 feet of water frontage along Gordon’s Creek, a brackish waterway linked to the James River. Notably, the property is not located within the FEMA 100-year floodplain, eliminating the need for flood insurance. Most of the home's furnishings, including designs by notable figures like Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau, and Marcel Breuer, are available for separate purchase.
