Italian designer Paola Navone creates exquisite ‘floating island’ furniture with Baxter
Italian architect-designer Paola Navone has collaborated with Baxter to create a new furniture collection titled “Quaderno di Viaggio: Marbella.” This collection is characterized by its experimental approach and a strong connection to nature, reflecting Navone's itinerant curiosity and Baxter's craftsmanship. The furniture pieces are presented in somnolent, coastal settings in the catalogue, emphasizing their tactile bridge between man-made design and natural environments.
The collection draws inspiration from various natural habitats. For instance, seating collections crafted from lightweight reed evoke the lush tropical forests of Manila and Manao. The Arizona system, with its agile structure and nomadic essence, pays homage to desert landscapes. A highlight is the Panama Bold seating system, which features a core of okoume, a remarkably light and weather-resistant African wood. This design allows the pieces to appear as if they are effortlessly floating like islands, reminiscent of the serene vastness of the ocean. The color palette further reinforces this natural connection, incorporating shades such as verdigris, sea blues, sky blues, and oranges. Navone explains that a camouflage pattern is also introduced to convey the idea of the natural world seen from a distance, where water and earth merge into indistinct shapes.
The materials selected for the collection enhance its organic essence through their primordial qualities. These include earthy materials like natural terracotta, minerals such as lava stone and Palladiana green marble, metals like acid-etched verdigris copper, and Manila reed. Navone highlights that the collection integrates numerous craft stories, where Baxter’s expertise converses with other global craft traditions that utilize natural materials like bamboo, wood, and lava stone. This blending of traditions allows the pieces to naturally coalesce into a cohesive collection.
Adding to the versatility of the collection, the furniture can be upholstered in Baxter’s signature soft leather, alongside specially designed fabrics. This choice serves a dual purpose, making the pieces suitable for both outdoor and indoor environments. Navone notes Baxter’s daring approach with materials, specifically mentioning the unexpected use of leather in outdoor spaces. This aligns with Baxter’s philosophy of radical permeability, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living spaces. A Baxter spokesperson elaborates that they do not perceive a single outdoor space but rather a variety of environments—patios, terraces, loggias, gardens, and poolside areas—each requiring furniture that meets specific performance demands and facilitates relationships between people and space.
Sustainability was a key consideration for both Navone and Baxter in the development of this collection. Navone explains that the pieces are crafted from natural materials using handcrafted techniques with ancient roots. The intention behind this mindful design and production process is to ensure that each piece has a long lifespan, gaining beauty and becoming more cherished over time. The “Quaderno di Viaggio: Marbella” collection therefore stands as a testament to innovative design, natural inspiration, artisanal craftsmanship, and sustainable practices.
