This New Mom’s IKEA Shelf Hack Is as Simple as They Come
Christina Healy, creative director at Holyoke Paper Co., devised a straightforward and stylish DIY hack for her newborn daughter’s nursery using IKEA Flisat wall shelves. Faced with the demands of new motherhood, Healy sought an uncomplicated yet personalized solution for storage in baby Chloé's room. Rather than opting for complex modifications, she elevated the $15 IKEA Flisat wall shelves by integrating leftover caning from a previous project. This minimal effort resulted in a chic and functional nursery accent.
The project begins by acquiring essential materials: a roll of caning, a heavy-duty staple gun, kitchen scissors, and two IKEA Flisat wall shelves. The shelves, which are typically used for displaying books or small items, provide a clean wooden base for the modification. The caning material introduces a textural and sophisticated element that enhances the aesthetic of the plain wooden units without requiring extensive crafting skills or time.
Healy’s method involves a critical initial step: partially assembling the shelves. Specifically, the bar component of the Flisat shelf is left unscrewed until the caning is attached. This ensures sufficient space for the staple gun to operate effectively without obstruction. The caning is then cut precisely to fit the width of the shelf, allowing for approximately a half-inch overhang on each side to facilitate secure attachment. Using kitchen scissors, the caning is trimmed to size, ensuring a neat and custom fit.
Once the caning is cut, it is stapled along the center of the shelf's rod, followed by securing it to the bottom portion of the shelf. This two-point attachment ensures the caning is taut and evenly distributed across the open bottom of the shelf, preventing items from falling through. After the caning is firmly in place, the final assembly of the shelves is completed, making them ready for use. This simple addition not only adds a decorative touch but also serves a practical purpose, preventing small items, such as books, from slipping off the shelves. The entire process is designed to be quick and easy, making it an ideal DIY project for individuals with limited time or experience. The completed shelves offer a custom, high-end look for a fraction of the cost and effort of more intricate furniture pieces.
