House Tour: Warm wood tones and interesting textures fill this one-bedroom condo unit in Eunos
This blog post details the design and renovation journey of Alwyn Hui's one-bedroom condo unit in Eunos, Singapore. Inspired by Marie Kondo's philosophy of keeping only items that "spark joy," Alwyn sought to create a simple yet bold living space with a focus on functionality and aesthetics, despite the limited floor space. He collaborated with designer Si Jianxin of Wynk Collaborative, a long-time friend, who understood his vision and was able to provide candid feedback throughout the process. The design brief emphasized simple yet bold aesthetics, avoiding a specific style to allow for creative freedom. Key requirements included maximizing storage with high cabinetry, utilizing the apartment's 3.2-meter-high ceiling, and concealing all electrical wires to maintain a clean look.
The designer adopted a tactile approach, incorporating various textures and a recurring color palette to break the linearity of the space. Deep blue and petroleum green laminates from Lamitak were chosen to complement warm wood veneers. The living room and open-plan kitchen feature overhead storage cabinets, accessible via a movable ladder, which also serves as a distinctive design element. Furnishings like Castlery’s Tracy sofa in charcoal and Grafunkt’s Trigg coffee table were selected to align with the overall color scheme. The kitchen stands out with matte blue mosaic tiles from Rice, paired with Fritz Hansen Series 7 counter stools in Oak from W. Atelier, and a matte black faucet from Living Phenomenon.
Alwyn initially faced challenges in visualizing the final design from renderings, but his doubts dissipated once construction began. Although the renovation cost exceeded the initial budget, totaling $70,000 (excluding furnishings) instead of $50,000, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome, attributing its success to Jianxin's expertise. Playful accents, such as brass door handles, were incorporated throughout the home. The bathroom features grey hexagonal tiles, adding a unique textural dimension. Original marble and wood floors were preserved in the living room and bedroom, with a brass strip delineating the two spaces, offering a tactile transition.
The blue color scheme extends into the bedroom through artwork and soft furnishings like curtains. The homeowner's passion for plants is evident in the outdoor private enclosed space (PES), a key reason for selecting the ground-floor unit. The traditional turf was replaced with gravel for easier maintenance and aesthetic appeal, transforming it into a vibrant garden. The garden hosts a diverse collection of plants, including popular houseplants like monstera deliciosa, monstera obliqua, various ficuses, snake plants, and spider plants, alongside orchids, ferns, cacti, succulents, and air plants. Edible plants such as rosemary, mint, basil, lavender, lime, and bay leaves are also cultivated. A unique dwarf red flowering gum tree, specifically grafted for tropical humidity, was a special addition brought from Sydney.
