Inside Cape Coral's Most Sophisticated Monochrome Home
This article highlights the transformation of a new build in Cape Coral into a sophisticated family home, designed by interior designer Dwayne Bergmann. The Chicago-based homeowners sought a comfortable escape for their family gatherings, leading to a design that emphasizes a tight palette of whites and grays, elevated with lustrous finishes, warm metallics, and organic textures. The core of the home is a spacious great room featuring 12- to 14-foot ceilings and Coliseo Blanco floor tiles, bright-white porcelain with a light gray marbled effect, running throughout the main areas. To introduce warmth and balance, Bergmann integrated wood tones, metallic accents, and cozy textiles such as velvet and faux fur. The entryway walls showcase a decorative plaster finish with multiple layers of silver, champagne, and bronze, creating a rich textural effect.
The living area is centered around a large, comfortable sectional upholstered in a bouclé-like performance fabric, designed to seat ten, serving as the foundation for the room's furniture plan. An oversized ottoman complements the sectional, and additional seating is discreetly incorporated into an asymmetric media wall. This media wall is a focal point, featuring porcelain quartz around the television and fireplace, light oak vertical accents, and textured wallpaper, adding depth and visual interest. The kitchen, adjacent to the living space, integrates two cabinetry finishes: high-gloss white and a light gray-washed oak, with the wood accent providing a counterpoint to the media wall and preventing an overly stark all-white aesthetic. An interlocking square pattern of gray-veined statuary marble forms the backsplash, balancing contemporary cabinetry with traditional elements, while watercolor-patterned upholstery on wooden-legged island stools echoes decorative themes from the living area.
The primary bedroom features a striking dove-gray velvet wall with floor-to-ceiling channels, creating a luxurious monochromatic effect. Nine-light pendants suspended from the ceiling on either side of the bed emphasize verticality, and whisper-gray drapes blend with the walls, offering unobstructed views of the canal. Two accent chairs with pleated keyhole backs provide a chic reading spot. Bergmann collaborated with each of the homeowners' children to personalize their rooms within the overarching design palette, allowing for individual style choices in tiles, furniture, and bedding while maintaining a continuous flow. Decorative wall moldings, ranging from familiar board and batten to more angular designs, were incorporated to enhance architectural character.
The bathrooms received special attention, given the homeowners' background in the plumbing business. The primary suite features nearly symmetrical his-and-hers vanities framed in driftwood gray wood, with a soffit and fully mirrored backs designed to reflect light and create a sense of opulence. All children's rooms include en-suite bathrooms matching their room's decor, equipped with advanced technology. This includes Toto toilets with smart bidets, heated seats, and air dryers; automated, zero-entry showers controlled by smartphones; and sensor-activated under-cabinet lighting. These high-end features are consistently applied throughout the house, exceeding typical installations. The home ultimately presents a compelling argument for a restrained, monochromatic design in a region often dominated by tropical colors, offering a serene backdrop for multigenerational family gatherings.
