Weekend Design: Vintage authenticity for Hollywood couple’s Laurel Canyon home

This article details the home renovation and interior design process for actor Ian Harding and artist Sophia Hart's Laurel Canyon residence. The 1948-built home in Los Angeles had undergone multiple disjointed renovations, resulting in a mix of architectural styles. Interior designer Shannon Ggem was tasked with restoring the house's intended character and creating a cohesive, vintage-authentic space tailored to the couple's preferences. Harding and Hart, who are fans of nature and wildlife, sought a home that reflected their personalities and love for eclectic, found objects rather than a "straight-off-the-showroom-floor look." The design process involved extensive collaboration between the couple and Ggem. They spent significant time sourcing unique furniture and accessories, often through platforms like Craigslist, to achieve a true vintage feel. Ggem's approach focused on understanding the couple's existing style and enhancing it with her expertise. In the great room, for instance, Ggem established a sense of entry, incorporated ample book storage, and utilized black linen sheers to frame the views of the surrounding landscape, creating a "tree house-y" ambiance. The couple's existing overdyed rug and tree stump tables were integrated, adding color and rustic charm to the masculine-leaning space. A significant element of their home's decor is a gallery wall featuring collected frames and natural finds from their walks, such as an ostrich egg displayed in a 1940s toothbrush cup. This reflects their appreciation for wildlife and found objects. Ggem also designed a functional entry area near the front door with custom console tables and crates for dog toys, along with carefully chosen resin antler lamps and hand-carved Italian deco chairs, all contributing to the vintage and nature-inspired aesthetic. The designer also successfully convinced Harding of the aesthetic value of a lamp placed in front of a view, which effectively sections off the area and defines the space. For the couple's extensive book collection, Ggem designed 15-foot-long built-in bookshelves painted in deep teal with periwinkle backing. These shelves also serve to house the TV, media equipment, and board games, with decorative elements like painted blocks created by Hart. Lighting choices, such as an Edison chandelier and a deco star, subtly define the living and dining areas, bridging the gap between the home's 1940s origins and contemporary design. The master bedroom was designed with a whimsical, woodsy theme, featuring reclaimed wood furniture, a rope-textured blanket, vintage Swiss backpacks, and small deer silkscreens. A vintage photographer's hand-painted backdrop, repurposed as drapes, is a favorite feature, allowing in just the right amount of light. The downstairs area was transformed into a full studio, serving as separate guest quarters and a workspace for Hart. Inspired by Hart's collection of Kay Nielsen's illustrations, the studio adopted an "Alice in Wonderland eclectic, creative boho" aesthetic. This included pink walls, a black and white harlequin pattern painted on the concrete floor, and large paper flowers. Ggem incorporated a taupe sofa that converts into a full bed, chosen for its "Frenchy-poo-with-an-edge look." The decor in this space incorporates eclectic accessories that nod to Laurel Canyon's bohemian history. Outdoor living was a priority for the couple. They expanded their usable outdoor space by acquiring an adjacent lot, resulting in three distinct outdoor rooms. These include a patio off the kitchen for morning coffee, a lounge area with enhanced nighttime ambiance from commercial-grade shaded lights and a unique fire pit, and an al fresco dining space. The dining area features a custom-made square redwood table and benches, capable of seating eight, and is adorned with a patterned umbrella and Moroccan lanterns for an eclectic and warm atmosphere. This comprehensive design approach successfully transformed the Laurel Canyon home into a personalized, vintage-authentic sanctuary that reflects the couple's unique tastes and the bohemian spirit of the neighborhood. #HomeDesign #LaurelCanyon #VintageDecor #EclecticStyle #InteriorDesign #HollywoodHome #ShannonGgem #IanHarding #SophiaHart #HomeDesign #LaurelCanyon #VintageDecor #EclecticStyle #InteriorDesign #HollywoodHome #ShannonGgem #IanHarding #SophiaHart
