Preppy Chic

Dana Gibson and her husband, Mark Longenderfer, purchased a Colonial Revival house in Ginter Park in 2018. They were drawn to the home's scale, abundant light, and fine craftsmanship. Designed in 1912 by D. Wiley Anderson for the Burton family, the house, originally known as Burton Manor, features imposing Ionic columns and a tiled front portico. Inside, vintage details include pairs of double-hung windows with fanlights, 11-foot ceilings, spacious parlors with pocket doors, a sun porch with a painted tin ceiling and tile floor, wavy window glass, and a chiming doorbell. The couple, both passionate about home renovation – Longenderfer as a contractor and Gibson as a designer and artist – have undertaken numerous projects over two decades, transforming various types of homes from cottages to split-levels. Gibson's design philosophy centers on creating happy and comfortable living spaces that reflect the occupants' personalities and exude joy. She approaches each project by taking cues from the house itself, starting with neutral palettes and then layering colors and patterns. She emphasizes the importance of observing how light interacts with a room before selecting paint and fabric, noting that an initial mistake of painting the dining room hospital green was corrected by opting for white walls to brighten the space. While she remains undecided about the coral color of the dining room's coffered ceiling, she has chosen to leave it for the time being. Gibson's personal aesthetic is rooted in the idea that "one idea sparks the next," leading to an organic and evolving design process. As the great-granddaughter of artist Charles Dana Gibson, Dana Gibson channels her own creativity into her work as a home product designer. Her collections feature cheerful, preppy chic lamps, wallpaper, chairs, stationery, fabric, and accessories. Despite her extensive product line, she avoids a showroom feel in her own home by incorporating patterns and prints from other designers like Peter Dunham, Tricia Guild, and Kathryn Ireland. Interior designer Sara Hillery provided advice and production assistance, particularly with the living room's pink silk drapes, a design element Gibson particularly cherishes. Gibson prioritizes light-infused colors that allow surfaces to reflect rather than absorb light, ensuring the colors do not feel too heavy. The interior of Gibson's new home showcases a celebration of contrasts, blending modern updates with traditional motifs. She appreciates the complexity of harmonizing different periods, styles, and artistic viewpoints. The spaciousness of the house allows for focused attention on special objects, avoiding a cluttered appearance. The dining room exemplifies this eclectic style, featuring a modern John Richard chandelier above a well-loved antique farm table, a gift from her grandmother, surrounded by chartreuse chairs. An abstract painting by Aimee Joyaux hangs above a wide antique sideboard, complemented by lamps with lacquered blue shades. In the adjacent living room, bergere chairs upholstered in a bright parrot fabric from Gibson's collection contribute to a joyful mix of color and pattern, fostering a sense of warmth, comfort, and fun. Gibson reflects that her style has evolved, becoming bolder and more daring over time, appreciating the energy created by juxtaposing opposites and incorporating unexpected twists to make a home memorable. #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #GinterPark #DanaGibson #HomeDecoration #PreppyChic #ColonialRevival #HouseTour #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #GinterPark #DanaGibson #HomeDecoration #PreppyChic #ColonialRevival #HouseTour
