The seventh week of 'The Block 2025' focused on kitchen renovations, where five couples presented their designs to the judges. Each couple aimed to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen, integrating various appliances, cabinetry, and design elements. The judging process highlighted both successes and areas for improvement in each design, ultimately leading to a tie for first place. Robby & Mat's kitchen was praised for its 'French farmhouse' aesthetic, featuring a well-placed island, Freedom cabinetry, Neff appliances, and a pot filler. The artwork, 'Lavender Farm by Jessie Rigby,' was noted for accenting the space. A secret door leading to the main bedroom received mixed reviews, with judges appreciating its whimsy but questioning its practicality due to a gap and ornaments. Despite some hurried styling and a missing glassware cabinet, their kitchen was considered a strong contender. Britt & Taz also secured equal first place, captivating judges with their massive island bench, wood-clad ceiling, and a cohesive color scheme that extended throughout their home. The kitchen showcased high-end appliances, including a Unox Casa oven, Quaisair rangehood, and a Subzero fridge, all set within Caribou Oak cabinetry and a Dekton Velnu benchtop. Black Mango Anka Oak counter stools complemented the design. The tiled floor, initially a point of skepticism, was ultimately approved for contributing to a contemporary country feel. The overall atmosphere and thoughtful touches like the Al.ive Kitchen Trio were highlighted as key factors in their success, extending beyond just the technology. Sonny & Alicia's kitchen, which earned second place, impressed with its blue Freedom cabinetry, strategically placed Asko appliances, and a Dekton-topped island bench. Judges commended the efficient layout, noting that the fridge and pantry were optimally positioned. Wall panelling and pink and earth-toned dot paintings from The Block Shop helped to integrate the kitchen with the adjacent living and dining areas, which also featured a new dining table and ceiling beams. The only suggestion for improvement was the addition of a dramatic element, such as a pendant light. Han & Can's kitchen, finishing in third place, effectively linked with the dining area by extending the pearlescent render from the living room fireplace to the rangehood and reorienting the dining table. The inclusion of a Vintec wine fridge next to an existing wine cabinet, AEG appliances, LED lighting in drawers, and Dekton Taga features were appreciated. A signature porthole Velux skylight was also a notable feature. However, the judges expressed concern about the muted color palette, questioning how the neutral tones of the cabinetry, despite being accented by the Al.ive Kitchen Duo set and Darren Palmer Collection St. Sultry candle, integrated with the rest of their color-rich house. Emma & Ben's kitchen, placing fourth, featured bold colors and Smeg appliances with rose gold trim, along with a blast chiller. While the Freedom Kitchen design was admired, the judges pointed out significant layout issues. The placement of the fridge near the bedroom doorway created a potential obstruction, and the decision to put a bin in a cupboard was questioned. Although the color palette was spot on and artwork like 'Geese of Daylesford' by Annie Ross, along with a Pomegranate, Watermelon, and Lime Al.ive Kitchen Trio, tied the room to the region, the lack of effective zone planning meant usability was sacrificed for style, impacting their score. Burke also notes that equestrian clients are often passionate about their horses, sometimes prioritizing barn aesthetics over their own homes. Burke discusses the influence of fashion on interior design, particularly in color trends.
