April Events in Boston: Dance, Design, and Film Festivities
April in Boston offers a diverse array of cultural and community events, catering to various interests from design and art to music, film, and athletic achievements. The month kicks off with the 10th annual Boston Design Week, themed "Design for Tomorrow, Today!". This 12-day festival, running from April 25th to May 7th, showcases Boston's innovative design community through events focused on progressive planning, environmental and social impact. Attendees can explore interior design, urban architecture, landscaping, and furniture, with a special highlight being the debut of the Discover Design Fair—an online exhibition of modern and sculptural objects. Miguel Rosales, known for renovating the Longfellow Bridge, will contribute to Design Week with a program on his latest bridge designs for the city.
Simultaneously, the art scene is vibrant, with "SMFA at Tufts: Archive and Autobiography" running through April 16th. This exhibition features five students from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts who delve into the concept of archives and their influence on identity, family, community, history, and world-making. The artists utilize various mediums, including video, soft sculpture, and painting, to present unconventional archival forms and personal narratives. Later in the month, on April 27th, Boston’s poet laureate Porsha Olayiwola curates “Canon, Canyon, Cannon” at the Gardner Museum. This evening of performance invites guests to reflect on personal and traditional canons, pushing the boundaries of language and performance with acclaimed poets like Rachel McKibbens and Justice Ameer.
For performing arts enthusiasts, the Boston Ballet presents "Our Journey" from April 6th to 16th, featuring two ballets that explore human connection. Justin Peck’s "Everywhere We Go" includes 25 dancers performing to Sufjan Stevens’ score, while Nanine Linning’s choreography to Claude Debussy’s "La Mer" and Lorelei Ensemble’s choral work "Les Sirenes" debut. Theatre lovers can catch "My Fair Lady" from April 18th to 30th at the Citizens Bank Opera House, directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher. The classic production follows Professor Henry Higgins’s attempt to transform a working-class girl into a high-society lady. On April 16th, Symphony Hall hosts "An Afternoon With Itzhak Perlman," where the 16-time Grammy Award-winning violinist shares personal stories, archival footage, and musical performances.
The 21st Boston International Film Festival screens over 80 short and feature films from more than 30 countries between April 13th and 18th. Attendees can purchase VIP passes for access to all five days of events, including red carpets, parties, and opportunities to meet filmmakers at the opening night gala. Community engagement and charity are also prominent this month. On April 16th, the "10 Years Stronger Benefit" at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, featuring Zac Brown Band and the Greg Hill Foundation, raises funds for the Marathon Bombings Survivors Fund and The Greg Hill Foundation, assisting survivors with medical needs as Boston approaches the 10th anniversary of the marathon bombings. The 127th Boston Marathon itself takes place on April 17th, uniting the city in a display of athletic prowess and community spirit.
In celebration of Earth Day and Women’s History Month, Amplify Latinx hosts the "Madrinas + Comadres Spring Series" on April 27th. This social event honors 10 Latinas and includes a visit to Uvida Shop, where guests can enjoy charcuterie and wine while making environmentally friendly candles. Additionally, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) hosts its 17th annual "Boston Hot Pink Party" on April 28th at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport. This event, which raised over $2.1 million last year, features live music, decor, and food, all in support of breast cancer research in New England. Finally, the 33rd annual "Literary Lights" dinner on April 30th at the Fairmont Copley Plaza honors exceptional writers like Jill Lepore, Alex Beam, Dave Eggers, Claudia Rankine, Heather Cox Richardson, and Scott Turow, while raising money for the Boston Public Library’s Special Collections.
