This Artful Pendant Light Fixture Evokes the Shape of a Seed
Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors, a renowned firm co-founded by Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, marks its 20th anniversary this year. The firm has established a global presence through projects for notable clients such as Ace, Freehand, Goop, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Complementing their design practice, the Roman and Williams Guild, a New York-based housewares store, celebrates its fifth year of operation. This store serves as a platform for the couple's proprietary designs and curated collections.
Among the latest offerings from the Roman and Williams Guild is "Seed," a new bronze pendant fixture. This piece showcases meticulous craftsmanship, being created using the ancient lost-wax casting process. Each individual chain link of the pendant is separately cast and subsequently assembled, allowing for customized drop lengths to suit specific design requirements. The central element of the fixture is a unique "seed" component, which is an elongated glass pod. This glass pod is handblown by skilled artisans in Brooklyn, highlighting a commitment to local craftsmanship and artisanal techniques.
Distinctive features of the glass pod include its graduating opacity. The glass begins with a denser, more opaque quality at the point where it connects to the bronze cap, gradually transitioning to a clearer, more translucent finish towards its lower end. This gradient effect is designed to evoke the organic and delicate appearance of a nascent seed, giving the fixture its evocative name and artistic character. The combination of bronze and handblown glass, along with the detailed lost-wax casting, positions the Seed pendant as a high-end design piece suitable for various interior settings.
The Seed pendant fixture is representative of Roman and Williams' overarching design philosophy, which often blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Their work frequently draws inspiration from natural forms and historical techniques, reinterpreting them for modern contexts. The product release underscores the firm's continued innovation in home furnishings and lighting design, reinforcing their reputation for creating unique and artful objects for the home.
