Tudor-Style Wayzata Estate by Stonewood
This article highlights a 9,800-square-foot Tudor-style estate located on Lake Minnetonka’s Gray’s Bay in Wayzata, meticulously crafted by Stonewood, LLC. The homeowners' desire for architectural authenticity guided the design and construction, resulting in a residence that faithfully embodies the classic Tudor aesthetic. Key architectural features include a substantial cast-stone fireplace in the two-story great room, a Juliet balcony adorned with a curved baluster railing, and a distinctive turret situated off the grand entry foyer, collectively enhancing the home's enchanting, fairy-tale ambiance.
A significant focus of the project was the intricate woodworking and millwork throughout the property. Stonewood, LLC demonstrated exceptional attention to detail in crafting quarter-sawn oak millwork that frames arched doorways, panels walls, and forms baseboards, crown moldings, and custom cabinetry. Every aspect of the woodworking, from the delicately carved rosettes integrated into the bookcase of the upper sitting room to the sophisticated egg-and-dart crown molding found in the den, was executed with precision. The main staircase stands as a central design element, showcasing quatrefoil design panels and custom-designed newel posts, illustrating the builder's commitment to bespoke craftsmanship.
Despite its grand scale, the estate was designed to be highly functional and livable for a family with two children. The layout includes an expansive open kitchen and dining area, seamlessly connected to the great room and a cozier hearth room, each featuring its own cast-stone fireplace. Practical amenities such as a spacious butler’s pantry, a dedicated kitchen office, a laundry room, and a secondary entry foyer with integrated storage solutions contribute to the home's everyday utility.
The upper level accommodates four bedroom suites, with the owners' suite designed as a private sanctuary. This includes a dedicated dressing room and closet for one, a separate closet for the other, and an extensive bathroom equipped with dual vanities, two separate toilet rooms, a claw-foot tub set within Carrara marble, and black-walnut cabinetry featuring unique burl panels. A wide hallway leads to the children’s suites, each distinguished by window seats and built-in storage, alongside an additional laundry room fitted with two washers and dryers. A guest suite and a sitting room complete the second floor.
The lower level is dedicated to entertainment and recreation, featuring a bar area, a media room, a pool table, a comfortable sitting area, and a game table. This floor also includes an exercise room and two additional bedroom suites. A notable and whimsical element is a hidden loft accessible via a ladder, ingeniously tucked above the ceiling in one of the children's suites, providing a private and imaginative retreat within this Wayzata residence.
