Gipsy Furniture Collection by A+Z Design
Hungarian studio A+Z Designers, founded by Attila F Kovacs and Zsuzsa Megyesi, has unveiled their "Gipsy Furniture Collection," a series of five distinct items inspired by the rich folk culture of Hungary and Transylvania. The collection aims to revive and recontextualize traditional objects and craft techniques that are at risk of being overlooked or becoming obsolete. This initiative stems from a desire to preserve cultural heritage while addressing contemporary needs for sustainable practices.
The collection features a hand-carved hardwood bench named Tek, upholstered with black sheep's wool, embodying traditional craftsmanship and natural materials. Another item is the Bogrács, an enamelled steel lamp available in various sizes, characterized by its spring suspension mechanism. This piece draws inspiration from traditional Hungarian cooking pots, transforming a functional item into a decorative light fixture. The Bödön is a versatile enamelled steel piece that functions both as a wine cooler and a stool, complete with a traditionally embroidered cushion, showcasing intricate textile art.
The Puli lounge chair, with its perforated metal frame, is upholstered using recycled strips of fabric, reflecting the designers' commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness. The collection also includes the Tuzhely table, a painted hardwood piece with a built-in campingaz stove and lantern, reminiscent of traditional bonefire or after-glow elements. These pieces collectively represent an effort to infuse modern design with historical narratives and the soul of their cultural origins, marrying aesthetic appeal with functional utility.
Attila F Kovacs, an architect and designer, brings over a decade of experience from the film industry, where he designed sets for feature films and commercials, including two years at the Royal Opera House in Turin. His work on bar and restaurant designs in Budapest has received awards and international recognition. Zsuzsa Megyesi, an interior designer and stylist, collaborates with Kovacs to produce their furniture and lighting collections. Their combined expertise informs the Gipsy Furniture Collection's unique blend of cultural depth and contemporary design.
The Gipsy Furniture Collection is slated for exhibition at Tent London in September, as part of the London Design Festival. This presentation will offer a platform for the designers to showcase their work and highlight the importance of cultural preservation through design. The collection's underlying philosophy also touches upon the broader theme of recycling and questioning what holds value in a rapidly changing world, suggesting a thoughtful approach to design that respects history and promotes sustainability.
