The DeWalt DCD999 Is One of the Most Powerful Cordless Drills We’ve Tested

The DeWalt DCD999 is a powerful cordless drill, excellent for demanding construction tasks involving drilling large holes, making multiple holes, and driving sizable threaded fasteners such as lag screws. Its hammer function also facilitates drilling into masonry. The drill features a three-speed transmission for precise drilling and driving, carbide jaws to prevent drill and drive bits from slipping, and a robust 20-volt brushless motor. These elements combine to deliver substantial power, yet maintain control through an 11-position clutch ring that regulates torque output. This clutch is critical for preventing over-drilling or snapping fastener heads. The DCD999's transmission offers three speed settings: 0-450 rpm, 0-1,300 rpm, and 0-2,000 rpm, enabling precise work across various materials like wood, metal, and masonry. The testing methodology for the drill involved rigorous use, starting with drilling 25 holes using a 1-inch Irwin Speedbor bit, followed by driving 1⁄4-inch, 2-inch long lag screws. After a brief cool-down period for the drill and battery, the process continued with drilling holes until the battery was depleted. The test material was Douglas fir framing lumber, including knots to simulate real-world conditions. The DeWalt DCD999, paired with a 6-amp-hour battery, impressively completed 306 holes in this test, demonstrating its endurance and speed. Unlike some other drills that require multiple cooling periods, the DCD999 maintained its performance throughout the extended test. The drill also includes a bright LED work light, which is particularly useful for working in dimly lit environments such as basements. A significant feature of the DCD999 is its half-inch capacity, ratcheting three-jaw chuck with carbide inserts. These carbide inserts provide a superior grip on drill and drive bits compared to hardened steel jaws, preventing slippage and ensuring that the drill's power is effectively transferred. This secure grip is essential for a high-powered tool to maximize efficiency and control during operation. While the hammer function was not tested as extensively as the drilling and screwdriving capabilities, it was found to be more than adequate for typical concrete work using fasteners like Tapcons, often eliminating the need for a dedicated rotary hammer for most tasks. This makes the DCD999 a versatile tool suitable for a wide range of professional and demanding DIY applications. #DeWalt #CordlessDrill #PowerTools #DrillReview #HomeImprovement #ConstructionTools #DIYTools #ToolTesting #DeWalt #CordlessDrill #PowerTools #DrillReview #HomeImprovement #ConstructionTools #DIYTools #ToolTesting
