Geek Review: Sgtoydisplay Cruiser Display Cabinet
Collecting highly-coveted statues and figurines presents a significant challenge in terms of storage and display. Many enthusiasts find themselves with an abundance of collectibles, such as the LEGO 1989 Batmobile, Marvel Legends figurines, and various Collector’s Edition statues, that quickly outgrow their existing display solutions like shelves or desktops. The Singaporean company Sgtoydisplay offers a solution through its range of display cabinets, designed to accommodate extensive collections. These cabinets are categorized into various sizes, named after Star Wars starships, including the small Corvette, medium Destroyer, and large Dreadnought.
This review focuses on the Cruiser variant, which is positioned between the Corvette and Destroyer in terms of size and price, ranging from S$780 to S$1,150 depending on customization options. The Cruiser cabinet features tempered glass on all sides, medium-density fibreboard shelves, and powder-coated titanium alloy frames, aiming to provide both an aesthetic display and durability. Purchasers have several customization choices for the Cruiser, including two sizes (100 x 40 x 200cm and 120 x 50 x 200cm), frame colors (default black or optional white), and backing material (glass, mirror, or solid-color panel). Additional lighting, such as eight smaller LED spotlights, can be added to enhance the display, complementing the two default downward-facing spotlights. These customization options cater to a wide range of collector preferences.
Upon delivery, which typically takes 4-8 weeks, the cabinets arrive fully-assembled. This convenience eliminates the need for complex assembly, though it requires accessible delivery locations. Each cabinet comes with a 1-year warranty covering damaged parts. The shelves are designed to support up to 15kg per tier, providing ample capacity for various figures and dioramas across its six tiers. The shelves are adjustable by loosening and tightening shelf studs with a screwdriver, although this process requires careful balancing, especially for the 2-meter tall cabinet. The height of the cabinet may also pose a challenge for shorter individuals when accessing higher tiers.
While the tempered glass offers robust protection against accidental impacts, a notable design aspect is that the glass doors require locking with a key to stay securely shut, otherwise they can swing open easily. A significant drawback identified is that the display cabinet is not dust-proof, necessitating regular cleaning, particularly in dust-prone environments. Another area for improvement is the exposed electronics on top of the cabinet, which lack a protective lid. This design choice could expose the circuitry to potential damage from environmental factors like water leaks, and the uneven surface limits its utility for placing additional items. Despite these minor imperfections, the Sgtoydisplay Cruiser cabinet is presented as a sturdy and spacious alternative to standard display cabinets, offering a practical and visually appealing solution for collectors to showcase their items and potentially serve as a conversation piece.
