Kick Back With the Reissued Jumbo Lounge Chair
The Jumbo lounge chair, originally designed in 1958 by Finnish interior architect Olof Ottelin, has been reissued by Fasetti. This distinctive "backrest chair" was initially named after Ottelin's eldest son's nickname and gained popularity as a stylish seating option for open fireplaces and low brick terraced homes of its era. The reissued version carefully preserves the designer's original intent regarding materials and colors, while integrating subtle adaptations to meet contemporary standards. One notable change is the elevation of the seat height, which has been adjusted to better suit modern preferences without compromising the chair's overall proportions. Additionally, the original redwood construction has been replaced with native birch, a more sustainable and readily available material.
The frame of the Jumbo lounge chair is characterized by its curved wooden sections, which seamlessly transition into the chair's legs. For the wood-toned iteration, Fasetti's craftspeople opted for pine, a choice that pays homage to Ottelin's extensive work in pine furniture production and his appreciation for traditional leisure home furnishings. Esa Niiranen, a craftsman at Fasetti, highlighted the enduring qualities of Olof Ottelin's design, noting its combination of carpentry expertise, refined detailing, and inherent functionality. Niiranen views the inclusion of the Jumbo chair in Fasetti's contemporary production line as a natural progression, aligning with the company's commitment to reintroducing significant domestic design pieces from the mid-20th century, specifically those spanning from the 1940s to the 1970s.
The reissued Jumbo lounge chair offers a variety of aesthetic options to suit diverse interior styles. The wooden frame is available in natural pine, opaque red, dove gray, or charcoal black. These frame finishes can be paired with a selection of high-quality upholstery fabrics. Makalu, a soft teddy fabric from Lauritzon’s, is offered in a pine color. Hallingdal, a classic wool fabric by Kvadrat, is available in red, providing a vibrant contrast. For a more textured and sophisticated look, Coda, a soft three-dimensional, two-tone woven fabric by Kvadrat, comes in dove gray and black. Each version of the chair is completed with armrests crafted from vegetable-tanned and un-dyed Sörensen leather, adding a touch of natural elegance and durability to the design. This careful balance of honoring the past while embracing present-day needs ensures the Jumbo lounge chair remains a relevant and appealing piece of furniture for contemporary living spaces.
Fasetti's reintroduction of the Jumbo lounge chair demonstrates a commitment to preserving and revitalizing iconic designs. The collaboration between the original design's spirit and modern manufacturing techniques allows a new generation to appreciate Ottelin's vision. The chair's design elements, such as the sculptural frame and thoughtfully selected materials, aim to provide comfort and aesthetic appeal. The range of available colors and fabrics provides flexibility for integration into various home environments, making it a versatile addition for those seeking both historical significance and contemporary functionality in their furnishings.
