The Lunar Chair Wants To Spend Its Life With You
The Lunar Chair, designed by Jonas Herman of Herman Studio for Danish brand Form & Refine, embodies a philosophy of functional and aesthetic sustainability, aiming to be a long-lasting piece of furniture that embraces the signs of aging and use. The design explicitly encourages a durable relationship between the user and the object, acknowledging that the chair will accumulate 'dents, scratches, and anything else you might throw at it in a lifetime' and patinate beautifully over time.
Crafted from FSC-certified oak, the Lunar Chair draws its name from its moon-inspired design elements, particularly the round seat and ergonomic crescent-shaped backrest. The design consistently features rounded profiles throughout its components, contributing to a coherent and soft aesthetic. Despite its robust construction, the chair is surprisingly lightweight and offers practical stackability, with the added functionality of being able to hang on the edge of a table. An X-shaped structure beneath the wooden seat provides enhanced stability and support, making the chair suitable for various stages of life, from growing families to new homes and office redesigns.
Jonas Herman’s primary objective in designing the Lunar Chair was to create a chair that is light and embracing, promoting diverse sitting postures rather than restricting the user to a single position. The distinctive rounded backrest, which integrates armrests, is meticulously crafted from a single piece of solid wood. This specific form of the armrests is engineered to provide optimal comfort, offering support for the sitter’s elbows and lower back, thus facilitating a wide range of seating positions.
For durability and ease of maintenance, the Lunar Chair is finished with naturally oiled oak, a choice that ensures the chair will develop a rich patination over the years without requiring extensive upkeep. Additionally, the seating is available in a padded version, upholstered with Nana Ditzel’s renowned Hallingdal 65 fabric from Kvadrat. This fabric comes in four color variants, allowing for customization. The chair's design reflects a clear Nordic influence, aligning seamlessly with Form & Refine's broader collection of simple, well-designed furniture that prioritizes sustainability in its core principles.
