Aqara H1 EU Wired and Wireless Switches – First Look
Aqara has introduced its new H1 series of wired and wireless smart switches for the European market. This initial review provides a visual overview of both the wired single rocker switch and the wireless double rocker variant, highlighting their design and features. The wired switches are specifically engineered to fit EU switch recesses and will be available in both with-neutral and no-neutral options, though the wired version shown is the no-neutral type. The packaging indicates compatibility with popular smart home platforms like Alexa and Marusia, a smart assistant from Mail.ru.
The wireless H1 switches, presented in a double rocker configuration, mirror the aesthetic of their wired counterparts from the front but operate on a CR2450 coin battery, offering up to five years of battery life. At the time of this publication, the wireless switches were not yet integrated with HomeKit, but Aqara confirmed that this compatibility would be implemented in the near future. While the EU versions are exclusively available in white, Chinese consumers can already purchase H2 switches in white, grey/graphite, or gold. The Chinese wired switches, however, are not suitable for EU recesses or certified for European use.
A key distinction between the new H1 switches and older Aqara rocker switches lies in their design and functionality. The H1 series features a redesigned hinge mechanism that allows the switches to maintain a 90-degree angle when at rest, a departure from the perpetually angled design of the original switches. Additionally, the H1 switches integrate their blue LED indicators on the front surface, unlike the original models which placed them on the underside.
Within the Aqara app, both wired and wireless H1 switches are listed, allowing for individual button control and configuration. The wireless rocker switch offers two operational modes: 'High-Speed Click Mode,' which only supports single presses, and 'Multi-function Mode,' which enables double and long press actions, providing greater flexibility for automation. The default setting is 'High-Speed Click Mode,' but users can easily switch to 'Multi-function Mode' if desired.
Regarding compatibility, the new H1 switches are designed to work with newer Aqara hubs that support Zigbee 3.0. Questions arose about their compatibility with older Aqara hubs (CN version) and off-brand Zigbee hubs like those found in Amazon Echo or Samsung SmartThings. While the wireless H1 switches were initially not exposed to older hubs, further testing was planned for the wired version. Theoretically, Zigbee 3.0 compliance should allow pairing with other Zigbee hubs, but this would likely mean sacrificing HomeKit integration. The wired H1 switches are strictly on/off and do not support dimming functionality. However, automations could be set up in the Aqara app to control other smart lights with dimming capabilities based on the H1 switch's actions. Availability in Europe was limited at the time of publication, with pre-orders seen in Swedish and Slovakian stores, and HomeKit compatibility for both wired and wireless H1 switches was confirmed to have arrived via firmware updates for the M1S, P3, and M2 hubs.
