Nanoleaf Lines review: These smart, backlit light lines can put on a show
Nanoleaf has introduced its latest smart lighting product, Lines, which offers a modular and customizable approach to decorative lighting. Unlike its previous offerings like Shapes and Elements, which emphasized blending into decor, Lines are designed to be a prominent, eye-catching feature. These backlit, foot-long light lines can display up to 16 million colors and snap onto hexagonal connectors, allowing users to create various unique designs on their walls or ceilings. The product is positioned as an enhancement for spaces like gaming setups, capable of synchronizing with screen colors for an immersive experience.
The Nanoleaf Lines Smarter Kit, priced at $200, includes nine light lines, nine hexagonal mounting connectors, nine caps, and 10 mounting plates with double-sided pull tape. An expansion pack is also available for $70, containing three light lines, three mounting connectors, and three mounting plates. Each light line is approximately 11 inches long, 0.78 inches wide, and about a third of an inch deep, weighing only 0.08 pounds. This lightweight design is attributed to the absence of touch sensitivity, a feature present in the Elements and Shapes panels. Each line features two light zones, capable of emitting different colors simultaneously, with a brightness of up to 20 lumens per line. This totals 180 lumens for a nine-piece kit, indicating their primary purpose is ambient or accent lighting rather than general illumination.
Installation of Nanoleaf Lines is designed to be user-friendly. Users are encouraged to plan their design using the Nanoleaf app's Layout Assistant, which features a drag-and-drop interface and an augmented reality (AR) viewfinder to visualize the design on a wall. Mounting can be done using either adhesive tape on mounting plates or screws. The author's personal experience found the peel-and-stick method to be secure due to the lines' light weight. The removal process is also straightforward, designed to avoid leaving residue or damaging paint. Setup involves connecting to a home Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz only) using a QR code on the power supply, and the system is compatible with Apple HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
The Lines share many functionalities with other Nanoleaf products, such as dynamic lighting scenes (e.g., “Cozy Blaze,” “Fiesta,” “Starry Sky”), the ability to create custom scenes, and music synchronization via a built-in microphone. They can also mirror colors from a PC or Mac display using the Nanoleaf desktop app. While the Lines can be grouped with other Nanoleaf lights for scheduling, they lack the touch sensitivity found in the Shapes and Elements panels, meaning users cannot interact directly with the lights for controls or smart home triggers. However, a dedicated controller connector provides physical buttons for power, brightness, scene changes, and music mode.
Future enhancements include “Skins” covers in black and pink, slated for December release, to improve the aesthetic of the lines when turned off, and “Flex Connectors” for wrapping designs around corners or onto ceilings. The system incorporates a Thread border router within its power connector, primarily for connecting Nanoleaf’s Thread-enabled Essentials lights, with a future update expected to support other Thread devices. Nanoleaf also plans to support Matter, aiming to unify various smart home platforms. Despite their premium price and the absence of touch controls, Nanoleaf Lines are lauded for their unique visual appeal, ease of installation, and broad smart home compatibility, making them a distinctive choice for decorative lighting.
