I shopped at Michaels and Hobby Lobby for fall decorations, and I prefer the chain with the darker selection
The author visited Michaels and Hobby Lobby to compare their fall decoration selections for home decor. The initial expectation was to find a variety of autumn and Halloween-themed items suitable for immediate October decorating. However, a significant difference emerged in the stores' approaches to seasonal decor.
Hobby Lobby's fall collection was heavily geared towards Thanksgiving and general harvest themes, characterized by items like pumpkins, gourds, scarecrows, and wall art with phrases such as "Hello, pumpkin" and "Meet me at the pumpkin patch." The overall aesthetic leaned towards a farmhouse style, focusing on themes of gratitude and autumnal abundance. Notably, Hobby Lobby explicitly does not carry Halloween decorations, a fact confirmed by a store associate, attributed to the CEO's religious beliefs which view Halloween as a pagan holiday. Furthermore, during the late September visit, a substantial portion of Hobby Lobby was already dedicated to Christmas displays, including trees, ornaments, and Santa statues, indicating an early transition to the winter holiday season.
In contrast, Michaels embraced the Halloween season wholeheartedly. Upon entering, the author was met with an extensive array of scary-faced ghouls, spooky skeletons, creepy dolls, and other Halloween-specific decor. The store offered wall art with darker themes like "Love you to death" and "Spells cast here," alongside floral skull art, snakes, and ravens, creating an Edgar Allan Poe-inspired ambiance. Michaels also featured a wide range of Halloween crafting supplies, from kids' kits to dark artificial flowers and garlands with sheet ghosts and skeletons, along with fake eyeballs and brains for home decor. While Michaels also showed early signs of Christmas setup, it was less prominent than at Hobby Lobby, with many winter holiday items still in boxes.
The author concluded that Michaels was the preferred destination for October decorating due to its extensive and varied Halloween selection, which caters to a desire for spooky and fun decor. Michaels consistently offers staples like skeletons and pumpkins while introducing new, interesting products annually. Hobby Lobby, while suitable for general fall and Thanksgiving decor, did not align with the author's immediate need for Halloween-specific items and felt premature with its abundant Christmas displays. The author plans to return to Hobby Lobby closer to Thanksgiving, but for Halloween and early fall, Michaels provided the desired 'darker selection' and creative inspiration.
