Before & After: Rustic Brown Kitchen Cabinets Get a Perfect White Makeover for $350
Miranda Caldwell and Jeff Heckbert undertook a significant kitchen renovation in their 1914 Toronto home, aiming to infuse it with more personality and brightness. The original kitchen featured 'ChocoCherry' faux wood cabinets and white countertops. Given the home's long and narrow layout and the kitchen's central location, which contributed to a darker ambiance, the couple decided to paint the cabinets white. This decision was primarily driven by a desire to reflect natural light from their west-facing backyard into the core of the house. They personally painted the cabinets using Fusion Mineral Paint’s Casement, a cost-effective solution that served as a blank canvas for further design elements.
The transformation, which cost around $1,500 and spanned approximately five years, involved a deliberate process Miranda refers to as 'slow decorating.' This approach allowed them to live with design choices before committing to the next step, ensuring each addition was intentional and meaningful. One prominent design choice was the incorporation of red checkerboard elements, inspired by a cozy pizza parlor they frequented. These checkers, which evoke the image of red checkered tablecloths and pizza boxes, were seen as a universal symbol of comfort food and were initially implemented as temporary vinyl peel-and-stick maroon tiles for the backsplash. Surprisingly, these temporary tiles proved durable, leading Miranda to keep them permanently.
Further enhancing the kitchen's aesthetic, Jeff constructed a new pantry, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Franklin Lakes, a 'blue jean' blue that balances the playfulness of the red checkers. New brushed brass hardware was also installed on the cabinets, adding a touch of sophistication. Art, personally meaningful to the couple, was strategically placed, even in unconventional spots like above the range hood, reflecting their philosophy of not limiting artistic expression to traditional areas. The total cost of the cabinet makeover, specifically painting them white, was around $350, demonstrating that significant aesthetic improvements can be achieved on a budget. The overall design created a cheerful and inviting kitchen that effectively brightened the central area of their historic home.
